Jake and Bret McGuire won their division at last year’s Serve for Youth tournament.
Is tennis month! If you enjoy tennis at any level, please consider playing in the annual Serve for Youth tennis tournament in Claremore. We gather together to play tennis in honor of Dian Russell, a well-known Claremore tennis player and local tennis coordinator. This year we are hoping to have an even larger pool of tennis players for the tournament.
Serve for Youth will be Friday, May 20 through Sunday, May 22. This tournament is held at the Claremore high school courts. There are women’s, men’s and mixed doubles draws, as well as men’s singles. Cost is $25 a person or $50 for a doubles team, with proceeds benefitting Volunteers for Youth. Don’t have a doubles partner? We’ll try to find you one! Ready to sign up? Go to volunteersforyouth.com/events/serve-for-youth and find an entry form.
All tennis players will receive a premium gift with their paid entry fee. And winners will receive “Serve For Youth Champion” towels. Tennis skill levels were varied last year, from college level players, to weekend warriors, and high school players. We accept all kinds! Not a tennis player? Come and watch some great matches and cheer on the players!
Since 1998, Volunteers for Youth’s mission has been to positively impact the lives of youth in our communities. The vision is to provide services for Rogers County youth in the areas of mentoring, safe and structured activities, healthy starts, skill building and service opportunities. Check out our youth programs at volunteersforyouth.com and look for our upcoming summer camps!
Volunteers for Youth has five programs. PAL mentoring is a site-based mentoring program that matches Rogers County public school students with caring adult mentors. U-Turn Academy provides a classroom setting for students on long-term suspensions. BLAST offers students in grades 6-8 a safe alternative after school. StepUp offers juvenile first offenders, and those demonstrating signs of delinquent behavior, an opportunity to avoid the juvenile court system and a chance to get back on track. Healthy Living/Prevention Programs work to reduce substance abuse among our youth, with a particular emphasis on underage drinking and prescription drug misuse. They are also working to prevent and reduce tobacco use and obesity in Oklahoma.
