Since 2007, the Folds of Honor has carried forth this singular, noble mission: To provide educational scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service-members.  Their motto says it best: Honor their sacrifice. Educate their legacy.

Returning home from his second Tour of Duty in Iraq, Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 Fighter Pilot in the Air Force Reserves, became painfully aware of the reality families face when a loved one in uniform is fallen or disabled.

Upon landing, the pilot announced that the remains of Corporal Brock Bucklin had been carried onboard the plane and asked all passengers to respectfully remain seated while his casket deboarded.

Major Rooney watched as Corporal Bucklin’s twin brother walked somberly alongside the flag-covered casket of his brother to meet his family. Among them was the deceased Corporal’s young son, Jacob. Major Rooney ached as he saw the other side of war through the eyes of Jacob.

Sadly, over half the passengers disregarded the pilot’s request and deboarded. Major Rooney made the decision to not only pay tribute to American service-members and their families, but he would live as a reminder that it is our duty to honor the sacrifices of those who preserve the freedoms we easily take for granted.

Major Rooney committed to changing the futures of America’s grieving military spouses and children. In 2007, he formed the Folds of Honor Foundation; a 501C-3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational scholarships to the families of these heroic Americans.

Higher Education Scholarships are awarded to spouses and children currently attending or recently accepted in a 2-year or 4-year degree program at an institution of higher education or a vocational/certificate program.  The Children’s Fund Scholarship seeks to provide support for dependents enrolled in grades K-12.  Scholarships are up to $5000.

Folds of Honor headquarters in Owasso and since their beginnings over ten years ago have provided nearly 20,000 scholarships to family members of America’s fallen and disabled service-members.  The organization has awarded scholarships in all 50 states as well as Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  Oklahoma is ranked fifth in total scholarships awarded for 2018 with a total of 247. With a cumulative average ratio of 86% of every dollar raised going towards the scholarship program, Charity Navigator has awarded Folds of Honor a 4-Star rating.

Dayna Dunn is Scholarships Director for the non-profit.  She says, “Our logo is the folded American Flag in which we see the heavy price of freedom.  It also symbolizes hope and the enduring ideals that make our country a beacon of democracy.  The logo reflects our mission—to honor their sacrifice by educating their legacy and leaving no family behind.”  Major Rooney’s Folds of Honor has grown from a vision into a movement and the folded flag is a constant reminder of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom, inspiring us to help equip and educate their loved ones.  Dayna thanks all who have embraced the call to help.
