In March when the Oklahoma State Board of Education suspended the remainder of the public-school year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, RSU Public TV came to the aid of public schools across Northeast Oklahoma by launching a new regional educational initiative called @HomeLearning. This effort addressed the growing educational need across our 24-counties in northeastern Oklahoma. For the first time ever, elementary and secondary students had ready access to over-the-air learning resources on RSU Public TV Channel 35.1 in order to complete the 2020 school year.

The Diabetes Epidemic

Diabetes has become the dark horse companion to COVID-19, as 40% of virus-related deaths during the pandemic have had a diabetes component. Of course, diabetes has been a medical rancor predating the virus, affecting 34 million Americans. Here in Oklahoma, 356,000 people have diagnosed diabetes, an additional 93,000 have diabetes, but don’t know it, and an alarming 35% of the adult population have prediabetes. The cost of diagnosed diabetes is estimated in Oklahoma to be $3.8 billion.

More Than Just Bingo: Tulsa SPCA 2020 Virtual Bingo Bash

The Tulsa Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tulsa SPCA) was founded in 1913 by local volunteers whose goal it was to provide care to homeless cats and dogs and also protect animals against abuse. Over a hundred years later, the organization has been continuously growing and with its shelter, clinic and various programs able to help thousands of animals. One of the Tulsa SPCA’s most popular fundraising events is the annual Bingo Bash, which was sold out in 2019, with more than 220 guests in attendance. Originally scheduled for July 18, 2020, it had to be postponed due to the current pandemic.

My travels to India gave me a huge appreciation for the vast and vibrant landscapes, traditions, and, of course, food. The mountains in the north with temperate climate have a wealth of tea, turmeric, and rice. At a guesthouse in Cochin, I was allowed to assist the cook each morning as he prepared the curries for lunch. If I had to choose one of my favorite Indian dishes using fresh curry leaves, it would be my Garlic Shrimp. It takes minutes to prepare, and it brings back many memories of southern India that I loved so much.

Six of the eleven school systems represented in Rogers County chose to participate in a competition sponsored by the Volunteers for Youth Partnership for Success (VFY-PFS). The competition was designed to promote prevention and/or awareness of dangers associated with the misuse of prescription opioids and/or the dangers/consequences of underage drinking. The VFY Partnership for Success was able to provide $500 to each participating school to offset any expenses for supplies and/or equipment incurred in the making of the video(s). Some of my favorite memories of Mammaw were at her dining room table, a round wooden table with six heavy chairs. She had a shelf in her cabinet full of orange Fire King bowls that we ate from at every meal. Mammaw didn’t cook much, but she was really good at heating up cans of soup or SpaghettiOs.
