Here in North America we celebrate our freedom and those who have and do serve our great nation for that freedom. Across this nation on July 4th, celebrations will include fireworks some little, some noisy and some will create huge beautiful colors that light up the skies.

Interesting fact about fireworks. They were discovered in China. All by accident sometime between 600-900 AD by mixing some common kitchen seasoning along with charcoal, sulfur and a few other ingredients created a form of gunpowder. Then to see how to get this formula to ignite, it was put into bamboo shoots and thrown into the fire to produce a loud blast. There you have it, Fireworks were born! By the Renaissance time, schools were learning how to make fireworks produce brilliant colors and booming sounds.

On July 3, 1776, the day before the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife in which he presaged the role of fireworks in Fourth of July celebrations. “The day will be most memorable in the history of America,” he predicted. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade…bonfires and illuminations [a term for fireworks] From one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.”

Guidelines for Fireworks Safety:

Fireworks are beautiful when they explode in the sky in multiple colors, patterns and sequences. Follow safety rules and use basic precautions when handling fireworks so that your celebration remains beautiful and safe. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety offer the following safety checklist: Always read and follow label directions. Have an adult present. Buy from reliable sellers. Use outdoors only. Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket). Only shoot from a hard, flat & level surface. Never experiment or make your own fireworks. Light only one firework at a time. Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 minutes then soak it in water). Never give fireworks to small children. If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place. Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water before putting in the trash. Never throw or point fireworks at other people. Never carry fireworks in your pocket. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework. Stay away from illegal explosives.
