In conjunction with September’s Hunger Action Month, administration at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is excited to announce a month full of events designed as fun for Tulsans while raising money to feed hungry Oklahomans.
First, local restaurants are helping the food bank fight childhood hunger by participating in Tulsa’s twelfth annual Restaurant Week, set for September 7 – 16. Restaurant Week is an opportunity for Tulsans to experience area restaurants at a great price and help fight hunger.
Each Restaurant Week meal purchased will provide a donation to the Food Bank’s Food for Kids programming, and will be matched by George Kaiser Family Foundation up to $25,000. Additional sponsors to Restaurant Week include: TulsaPeople, Jarboe Sales Company, Curtis Restaurant Supply and OpenTable. Thanks to events like this, the Food Bank was able to provide more than 800,000 meals to hungry children last year.
To kick off Restaurant Week, local establishments are offering special treats outside of the typical fixed-priced menus. From 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, check out Antoinette’s Bakery, Chimera, Laffa and Prairie Brew Pub for special offerings. From each specialty item purchased, the restaurants donate $1 to the Food Bank.
Participating restaurants and their menu offerings will be listed starting August 15 on www.okfoodbank.org. Other additional offerings include specialty cocktails at some restaurant locations and a few special offerings from food trucks at Guthrie Green’s Food Truck Wednesday. Additionally, on Friday Sept. 14, local barbecue establishments, including Albert G’s and most Rib Crib locations, will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Food Bank. Finally, Naples Flatbread is hosting a San Gennaro Feast to close out Restaurant Week on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
After the close of Restaurant Week, the Women’s Council of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is hosting Girls Night Out at the Food Bank from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20. Girls Night Out is a casual event with food, drinks, music and door prizes. Women are invited for a night out and to learn more about the Food Bank’s mission. To reserve a seat, call (918) 936-4550. Additionally in September, the Food Bank is again presenting the Take a Seat campaign. Take A Seat events fall between Sept. 21 - 30. The idea behind the initiative is simple: get together with friends or family and help our many neighbors struggling with hunger.
During Take A Seat, supporters will host a variety of food-related events to benefit the Food Bank. Event hosts can establish a fee to attend, or ask for donations. All proceeds will benefit the Food Bank. Events can be simple or elaborate, catered or prepared by the host or pot-luck. They can focus on breakfast, coffee, brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktails, dessert, cookouts - whatever direction the host/s find interesting.
