MENDELSSOHN The Hebrides RAVEL Le tombeau de Couperin RAVEL Tzigane BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4 Inspiration shows up anywhere and everywhere. Mendelssohn, a lover of nature, found inspiration in the natural acoustics of a sea cave in the InneTur Hebrides of Scotland. The idea for Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin came forth on a battlefield in World War I, and his Hungarian musical style of Tzigane, after hearing a private concert of a talented Hungarian violinist. While catching his breath before returning to the heroic struggles of the Fifth Symphony, Beethoven found inspiration for his illuminating Symphony No. 4 while retiring in the country estate of a devoted admirer. This swashbuckling grown-up prequel to "Peter Pan" upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, "Peter and the Starcatcher" playfully explores the depths of greed and despair and the bonds of friendship, duty and love. Based on the 2006 novel "Peter and the Starcatchers" by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson and adapted for the stage by Rick Elice, the play won five Tony Awards in 2012.

For more than 30 years, Carnegie Hall Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades 3-5 to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Tulsa Symphony became a Link Up partner in the 2015-16 season. Students participate by singing or playing along on recorder with TSO from their seats in the concert hall. This season, TSO will serve over 12,000 students by partnering with their school music programs. This additional of our Link Up Family Concert allows for students to show their families what they learned and lets them join in the performance with a live symphony orchestra. There will be a couple of surprises, and we'll take a little time for the students to teach everyone a few of the songs before this special concert begins. “Green Art, Red Wine”; Your Design Gallery’s event celebrating Earth Day! “Green Art, Red Wine” will include artists that create sculpture, clothing, assemblages, wall art, and other artwork constructed from found objects. This theme solicits artwork made with common items that you would normally think to discard. Recycled art is something that is beautiful, unique and/or timeless… it just happens to be created with junk. Do these pieces of art really rate an art show and are they worth the purchase? Make plans to stop by and see for yourself! Opening night is set for April 6th, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:30pm at Your Design located at 211 S. Main St.; in the heart of the Rose District. There will be live local music, delicious food and wine provided for this event. This annual event is always open to the public and free of charge. Our goal is to introduce art to as many people as possible. Our hope is by experiencing these art shows and meeting the local artists the community is inspired and motivated to create for themselves. Our desire is to support and encourage local artists! The duration of the show is from April 6th – April 28th.

BRAHMS Ein Deutsches Requiem Tulsa Oratorio Chorus joins Tulsa Symphony on a work that became the central and longest work of Brahms’ career, the German Requiem. Unconvinced of man’s afterlife, Brahms composed this work after the deaths of his beloved friend and fellow composer Robert Schumann and then his own mother. Ein Deutsches Requiem was not intended as a mass for the dead as his contemporaries and earlier composers had written, but instead as a work of consolation for those left behind. Be sure and make time this spring to visit Pawnee and help us kick off the second fifty years of the Oklahoma Steam Threshing and Gas Engine Show. Our steam engine display area, as well as the working steam powered exhibits, are always very popular and this year should be no exception. Our featured steam engine will be the 20 Horsepower Keck Gonnerman. In a break from traditionally naming a brand of gas tractor, the “Feature Gas Tractor” will be all steel wheel tractors. This will mean that most of the featured tractors will be pre-1930. Not to be outdone, the “Feature Gas Engine” will be the Maytag line of equipment. Many folks don’t realize that the grandmother to their utility room washer was a gasoline powered work horse that also could churn butter as well as grind meat and make sausage. These features will make for an exciting look at farm life in the first half of the 20th century. As always, there will be 15 to 20 steam traction engines (steam tractors) operating “era correct” machines. Probably the most popular of these is our steam powered saw mill that operates almost nonstop during show hours. This exhibit is complemented by a cedar shingle cutting machine, a woodshop planer and other assorted timber/lumber related machines. Another crowd pleaser is our blacksmith shop, where tools and household items are hand forged from raw steel. Also, we have an early 1900s machine shop, showing how metal working machines similar to today’s were powered by steam engines. In our “Domestic Display”, located in our headquarters building, you will see displays of the items of everyday life used up until around the end of WWII. This is our newest feature and generates a lot of nostalgic thoughts for rural folks, as well as wonder from the younger more urban groups. We also host a flea market, arts and craft area, and a hobby related swap meet. The fun doesn’t stop at dusk. On Friday and Saturday evening (weather permitting) the steam engines put on a “spark show” shooting glowing cinders 50 to 60 feet into the air. As is the tradition with most shows of this type, there will be a bean and cornbread dinner for vendors and exhibitors on Thursday evening. Camping (for exhibitors) is available on the grounds. Hookups are $10 per night for water and electric and $5 for primitive. There is a dump station on the grounds. Spectator and overflow camping is available a short distance away at Pawnee Lake, also for a fee. (50 amp hookups at lake only) Come see us again, or for the very first time, and don’t let the weather bother you. The show goes on rain or shine, with many inside exhibits. For more information our website is: http://www.oklahomathreshers.org May 5th and 6th, 2017 Held at the Steam Park Grounds in Pawnee, Oklahoma (401 East Beck Drive) Gates Open at 8:00 a.m. Adults: $10.00 per day………….2 day pass $15.00 Children 12 and under are free Friday is School Day (school groups accompanied by teachers are admitted free)

HAYDN Symphony No. 90 KODALY Háry János Suite STRAVINSKY The Firebird Suite (1945 version) Conducted by Daniel Hege, this program is sure to elicit a smile from seasoned concertgoers and first-timers alike. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 is not without glimpses into his humorous, prankster side. Influenced by his love for both folk music and for French impressionistic music, Kodaly was able to paint in impressionistic orchestral colors the comedic tale of a Hungarian style Don Quixote in his Háry János Suite. Stravinsky captivates listeners with his ballet music suite The Firebird. Even without the ballet theater, Stravinsky’s music summons the imagination to delight in Russian fairy tales of the magical glowing bird that can be a blessing or a curse to its owner. Daniel Hege, principal guest conductor Pre-concert conductor chat begins at 6:30 and student performances at 6:45. Direct from Broadway, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a “big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare (Tony® nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is “The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!” (New York Magazine).

Tulsa Pop Kids Inc. was created in 2017 to provide support within our community specifically to promote literacy programs for children through Pop Culture and entertainment. All proceeds raised during the Tulsa Pop Culture Expo will help our efforts in promoting that cause including providing comics to local elementary schools and to the children in St. Francis Medical Centers. Celebrity Guest Announced So Far: Catherine Hicks - Catherine appeared in several high profile films through the early 1980s, in leading and supporting roles whilst also appearing on television. Films included: Death Valley (1982), Garbo Talks (1984), The Razor's Edge (1984) and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). She played "Dr. Gillian Taylor", opposite lead actor William - Shatner, in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), a cult sequel to the popular Star Trek films. In the late 1980s, she played the lead role of "Karen Barclay" in Child's Play (1988), a film that remains highly regarded in the horror genre. It was on the set of this film that Catherine met her future husband, Kevin Yagher, with whom she had a daughter in 1992. Despite her obvious talent, big movie roles never seemed to find their way to her in the early 1990s. In spite of this, she worked consistently, appearing in Liebestraum (1991), Dillinger and Capone (1995), the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Redwood Curtain (1995), and a small role in the semi-high profile movie, Turbulence (1997). In 1996, she landed the lead role in the Warner Bros. television series, 7th Heaven (1996), playing "Annie Jackson-Camden". From that point on, her career revolved around the television series and her family, occasionally appearing in films. Her last to-date film was the television movie, For All Time (2000), opposite Mark Harmon. 7th Heaven (1996) was canceled in 2007, after a successful eleven-year run, but it is likely that this attractive and talented actress will remain in films and television for a long time to come. Chase Masterson - Chase Masterson is perhaps best known as sexy casino girl “Leeta” on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and “Ivy Lief” on General Hospital (1963), as well as being the featured guest star in the first Emmy Award-winning episode of ER (1994). Masterson was named one of the “Hot Leading Ladies” of Film in 2008 by “Film Fetish”, one of the world’s “50 Sexiest Women” by “Femme Fatales Magazine”, the “#1 Favorite Science Fiction Actress on Television” in a “TV Guide” online readers’ poll, and one of the “Top 20 People to Watch in Hollywood” by “Sci-Fi Universe Magazine”. She was also named “Best Feature Film Producer” by the LA Femme Film Festival for her work on Yesterday Was a Lie (2008). Justin Nimmo - Justin Nimmo is an American actor who is best known for his role as Zhane in Power Rangers in Space. He was born in Lexington, Oklahoma and currently resides in Purcell, Oklahoma. Nimmo's film appearances range from American Indian Graffiti, The Cabin, Dude, Where’s My Car, and Pleasantville. He has also appeared on television in Power Rangers in Space and Saved by the Bell. Currently Nimmo is a small business owner in Purcell, OK. John Anderson - John Anderson is an actor, comedian, and self-proclaimed professional "Trick Talking Meat" who hails from Birmingham, Alabama. He landed his first major motion picture role as a Ravager in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. John also appeared in Sleepy Hollow, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Case for Christ, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, MacGyver, Being Mary Jane, and Tyler Perry's Too Close to Home. He will appear in a number of television shows and movies premiering later this year, and most recently appeared in Make-up Artist Magazine, displaying his alien movie make-up as a Hurctarian Ravager. Tom Waite - Tom Waite is a Hollywood actor and stuntman. His acting credits include roles in such films as: The Amazing Spiderman, Rage, Ride Along and All Nighter (2017). His TV roles include: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, Castle, and Supergirl. Along with doing his own stunts in such films and TV shows as: Pirates of the Caribbean, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Last Airbender, CHUCK, CSI Miami, and Training Day, he has been the stuntman for some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Bradley Cooper, Jake Gyllenhaal, Nicolas Cage, Bill Paxton, and recently Alan Tudyk on the TV show Powerless. The program will close with Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. Based on four hand piano works by Weber, which Hindemith and his wife often played, this colorful work is a sketched series of movements that remains perhaps Hindemith’s most popular work.
