Guerrilla Marketing Event

March 22, 2017 | 1 p.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, March 22, 2017 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Stephanie Hill, Director of University Relations & Communications Office: 918.495.7337, Mobile: 918.720.5548 eat12@eau12eav12eaw12 Who: Student Branding & Promotions Class What: Guerrilla Marketing Event Where: ORU Campus When: Wednesday, March 22 at 1:15 pm Tulsa, OK - With 1600 unsolicited messages bombarding consumers every day, it takes a unique approach to cut through the clutter and gain attention. Oral Roberts University students are hoping to do just that in an upcoming guerrilla marketing event. Students in ORU’s Branding & Promotions classes will use clothespins to get information out about a non-profit doing work around the world to alleviate poverty. They will clip the clothespins with the non-profits website to unsuspecting students’ book bags or jackets. When they later discover the clothespin, their curiosity will drive them to the website where they will learn about the organization and its cause. The students will learn about Kiva (https://www.kiva.org/), a non-profit that helps connect people who are willing to provide loans to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals provide a $25 business loan to help create opportunity for struggling entrepreneurs around the world. It’s not about giving a donation but about asking others to make a short-term microloan with a 97% chance of repayment. The students will gather their clothespins in the Library Resources Center room 232A on Wednesday, March 22, at 1:15 p.m. and then spread throughout the campus pinning the good news on unwary passersby. The guerrilla marketing is a small part of the overall project strategy, which is to target college students' desire to touch lives and make a difference. Because online presence is key nowadays, the students are posting message updates, pictures and student-produced videos on social media as well. They’ve also conducted surveys and done research to gather insight on public awareness and opinion. They’ll take the results of the guerrilla marketing along with their research and present their ideas to a panel of investors “Shark Tank” style. Those investors will decide which student agency wins the account. ### About Oral Roberts University Oral Roberts University (ORU) is a world-renowned Christian university located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Founded in 1963, ORU serves students from 50 states and 90 countries, representing over 40 denominations. Oklahoma Steam Threshing & Gas Engine Association Annual Show

May 5-6, 2017 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Be sure and make time this spring to visit Pawnee and help us kick off the second fifty years of the Oklahoma Steam Threshing and Gas Engine Show. Our steam engine display area, as well as the working steam powered exhibits, are always very popular and this year should be no exception. Our featured steam engine will be the 20 Horsepower Keck Gonnerman. In a break from traditionally naming a brand of gas tractor, the “Feature Gas Tractor” will be all steel wheel tractors. This will mean that most of the featured tractors will be pre-1930. Not to be outdone, the “Feature Gas Engine” will be the Maytag line of equipment. Many folks don’t realize that the grandmother to their utility room washer was a gasoline powered work horse that also could churn butter as well as grind meat and make sausage. These features will make for an exciting look at farm life in the first half of the 20th century. As always, there will be 15 to 20 steam traction engines (steam tractors) operating “era correct” machines. Probably the most popular of these is our steam powered saw mill that operates almost nonstop during show hours. This exhibit is complemented by a cedar shingle cutting machine, a woodshop planer and other assorted timber/lumber related machines. Another crowd pleaser is our blacksmith shop, where tools and household items are hand forged from raw steel. Also, we have an early 1900s machine shop, showing how metal working machines similar to today’s were powered by steam engines. In our “Domestic Display”, located in our headquarters building, you will see displays of the items of everyday life used up until around the end of WWII. This is our newest feature and generates a lot of nostalgic thoughts for rural folks, as well as wonder from the younger more urban groups. We also host a flea market, arts and craft area, and a hobby related swap meet. The fun doesn’t stop at dusk. On Friday and Saturday evening (weather permitting) the steam engines put on a “spark show” shooting glowing cinders 50 to 60 feet into the air. As is the tradition with most shows of this type, there will be a bean and cornbread dinner for vendors and exhibitors on Thursday evening. Camping (for exhibitors) is available on the grounds. Hookups are $10 per night for water and electric and $5 for primitive. There is a dump station on the grounds. Spectator and overflow camping is available a short distance away at Pawnee Lake, also for a fee. (50 amp hookups at lake only) Come see us again, or for the very first time, and don’t let the weather bother you. The show goes on rain or shine, with many inside exhibits. For more information our website is: http://www.oklahomathreshers.org May 5th and 6th, 2017 Held at the Steam Park Grounds in Pawnee, Oklahoma (401 East Beck Drive) Gates Open at 8:00 a.m. Adults: $10.00 per day………….2 day pass $15.00 Children 12 and under are free Friday is School Day (school groups accompanied by teachers are admitted free)

Foster Care Informational Meeting

May 17, 2017 | 6 - 7 p.m.

There are about 10,000 children in Oklahoma’s foster care system. On any given day there are 150 children in need of a foster home, which has yet to be found. When a foster home is not available, these children stay in county shelters. In response to the lawsuit that was brought against DHS, the use of county shelters is being phased out. This has created an urgent need for more foster homes in Oklahoma. Circle of Care works to recruit, train, and provide ongoing support to foster parents. We have a contract through DHS to provide these services anywhere in the state.

2017 OK Mozart International Music Festival

June 11, 2017 | 2 p.m.

Tulsa Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Tulsa Children’s Chorus will premiere a new orchestral work by Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, Chickasaw classical composer, on Sunday, June 11 at the 2017 OK Mozart International Music Festival. The foundation of the newly commissioned piece titled Muscogee Hymn Suite, is from within historic Creek Indian church hymns. Muscogee Hymn Suite is an adaptation and orchestration of traditional Muscogee (Creek) church hymns in the Muscogee (Creek) language. Joining TSO and Tulsa Children’s Chorus will be classical baritone soloist Grant Youngblood and traditional Mvskoke singer Curtis Scott, conducted by Gerhardt Zimmermann. A unique artistic result of European contact is the American Indian church hymn. As missionaries traveled across the early United States into Indian Country, they became one of the first to document Native languages and create translations of the Bible and other Christian texts, including church hymns. This blending of music and language lead to a new series of a hybrid music, composed by tribal citizens. For Southeast American Indians (Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek and Seminole) this beloved hybrid‐style of music is now more than 200 years old with a vast repertoire. American Indian church hymns are unmistakably native and is the third category of traditional Southeast American Indian music, alongside stomp dancing and timeworn folk songs.

THUNDERBOLT Experience Back to School Event at Rogers County Health Department

August 2, 2017 | 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Getting all of the recommended vaccines is one of the most important things a parent can do to protect their child’s health, especially when they are in school or a day care center where disease outbreaks can occur. Whether it’s a baby starting at a new day care facility, a toddler heading to preschool, a student going back to elementary, middle or high school – or even a college freshman – parents should check their child’s vaccine records. “When parents are preparing to send their child off to day care, school or college, it’s the perfect time to ensure he or she is up to date on all recommended and required vaccines,” said Larry Bergner, County Administrative Director. Child care facilities, schools and colleges are highly susceptible to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Children can easily transmit illnesses to one another due to poor hand washing, uncovered coughs, and close contact with many people. When children aren’t vaccinated, they are at increased risk for disease and can spread disease to others in their classrooms and communities. This includes babies too young to be fully vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions. The Rogers County Health Department offers all required vaccines for school children and teens 18 years of age and younger at regular immunization clinics to be held on walk-in days-Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 2664 N. Hwy 88. Parents of children with private health insurance or SoonerCare health insurance are encouraged to take their children to their regular health care provider or clinic to receive these vaccines. In addition, “look for more information about a big event planned for August 2nd, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Rogers County Health Department. Fun for everyone and chances to win some great prizes,” said Mr. Bergner. Children attending day care facilities in Oklahoma must be up-to-date for their age with childhood vaccines. A schedule showing the required vaccines is available on the Oklahoma State Department of Health web site at: https://go.usa.gov/xNvzc. Kindergarten Students Children entering kindergarten are due for boosters or second doses of four vaccines: • MMR (measles, mumps and rubella vaccine) • Polio • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines) • Varicella (Chicken Pox) The second dose of chickenpox vaccine is recommended, but not required by Oklahoma’s school law. Children who recently moved to Oklahoma may also need hepatitis A vaccination, which is required for students in all grades in Oklahoma. Students need at least one dose of hepatitis A vaccine to start school. A second dose is due six to 18 months later. Grades 7-10 Students in grades seven through 10 are required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). Older students are strongly encouraged to receive a dose of Tdap vaccine if they missed it. This is necessary for adolescents and adults so they won’t contract whooping cough and infect babies and toddlers. Parents and teens, both boys and girls, are strongly urged to ask their health care provider for HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, which prevents several types of cancer. The immune response to the HPV vaccine is better in pre-teens and can mean better protection for teens. New guidelines for completion of the HPV vaccine series is now only two doses separated by 6 – 12 months if the first dose is given before the child’s 15th birthday. The meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) is also important for adolescent and teen health. The MCV4 vaccine protects against the devastating effects of bacteria that cause meningitis or a life-threatening bloodstream infection. Meningococcal disease is relatively rare, but if contracted, can cause death in less than 48 hours and leave those who survive with life-long problems such as brain damage or limb amputation. HPV and MCV4 are recommended for all kids at 11-12 years of age with a booster of MCV4 at age 16. The meningococcal vaccine is required for first-time college students who will live in on-campus student housing. College students are also required to have MMR and hepatitis B vaccines. For more information about immunizations, call the Rogers County Health Department at 918-341-3166 or contact your health care provider.

Brown Bag It 2017-18 Series Announced for Tulsa PAC Trust

December 6, 2017 | 12:10 - 12:50 p.m.

The Tulsa Performing Arts Center Trust’s Brown Bag It free noontime concert series on select Wednesdays at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center is back with another exciting line-up. The popular series, which was established in the early 1980s, is once again returning to the first Wednesday of every month, with the exception of January. Vocalist Janet Rutland kicks off the 2017-18 Brown Bag It season. Janet is equally comfortable singing Hank Williams or Johnny Mercer. Rutland will be accompanied by pianist Spencer Sutton for a set of vintage pop, jazz and country music. The mission of the series is to offer the community an opportunity to visit the Performing Arts Center facility and hear quality musical presentations. Audiences are invited to bring and eat lunch during the concerts, creating an informal atmosphere. Likewise, the musicians are encouraged to “inform” as well as perform by giving background information or program notes during the concert, breaking down the barriers between performer and audience. Each concert lasts 40 minutes. Concert Schedule First Wednesday from 12:10pm - 12:50pm Tulsa Performing Arts Center – Westby Pavilion Free and family friendly!
