MENDELSSOHN The Hebrides RAVEL Le tombeau de Couperin RAVEL Tzigane BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4 Inspiration shows up anywhere and everywhere. Mendelssohn, a lover of nature, found inspiration in the natural acoustics of a sea cave in the InneTur Hebrides of Scotland. The idea for Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin came forth on a battlefield in World War I, and his Hungarian musical style of Tzigane, after hearing a private concert of a talented Hungarian violinist. While catching his breath before returning to the heroic struggles of the Fifth Symphony, Beethoven found inspiration for his illuminating Symphony No. 4 while retiring in the country estate of a devoted admirer. Daniel Hege, principal guest conductor Rossitza Jekova-Goza, violin Pre-concert conductor chat begins at 6:30 and student performances at 6:45. For more than 30 years, Carnegie Hall Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades 3-5 to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Tulsa Symphony became a Link Up partner in the 2015-16 season. Students participate by singing or playing along on recorder with TSO from their seats in the concert hall. This season, TSO will serve over 12,000 students by partnering with their school music programs. This additional of our Link Up Family Concert allows for students to show their families what they learned and lets them join in the performance with a live symphony orchestra. There will be a couple of surprises, and we'll take a little time for the students to teach everyone a few of the songs before this special concert begins. The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art partners with the Tulsa Performing Arts Center to honor the late Michael Knigin and his show, “Remembrance 2000,” in the PAC Gallery during April. Knigin’s exhibit features 25 pieces across a series of images on canvas, all commemorating both dead and living heroes of the Holocaust. Knigin’s art serves as an ongoing reminder of the past and a step toward building a better future. “In my paintings and graphics, I seek to isolate objects and images from their mundane contexts and reorganize them, thereby granting them a new life,” said Knigin. “I select colors, textures and forms that complement the realistic images that I use. The elements reinforce the fact that I am creating something new, not merely replicating nature’s truths.” The gallery is open April 5-27, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and during all Chapman Music Hall events.
“Green Art, Red Wine”; Your Design Gallery’s event celebrating Earth Day! “Green Art, Red Wine” will include artists that create sculpture, clothing, assemblages, wall art, and other artwork constructed from found objects. This theme solicits artwork made with common items that you would normally think to discard. Recycled art is something that is beautiful, unique and/or timeless… it just happens to be created with junk. Do these pieces of art really rate an art show and are they worth the purchase? Make plans to stop by and see for yourself! Opening night is set for April 6th, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:30pm at Your Design located at 211 S. Main St.; in the heart of the Rose District. There will be live local music, delicious food and wine provided for this event. This annual event is always open to the public and free of charge. Our goal is to introduce art to as many people as possible. Our hope is by experiencing these art shows and meeting the local artists the community is inspired and motivated to create for themselves. Our desire is to support and encourage local artists! The duration of the show is from April 6th – April 28th.

BRAHMS Ein Deutsches Requiem Tulsa Oratorio Chorus joins Tulsa Symphony on a work that became the central and longest work of Brahms’ career, the German Requiem. Unconvinced of man’s afterlife, Brahms composed this work after the deaths of his beloved friend and fellow composer Robert Schumann and then his own mother. Ein Deutsches Requiem was not intended as a mass for the dead as his contemporaries and earlier composers had written, but instead as a work of consolation for those left behind. James Bagwell, guest conductor Tulsa Oratorio Chorus Pre-concert conductor chat begins at 6:30 and student performances at 6:45. HAYDN Symphony No. 90 KODALY Háry János Suite STRAVINSKY The Firebird Suite (1945 version) Conducted by Daniel Hege, this program is sure to elicit a smile from seasoned concertgoers and first-timers alike. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 is not without glimpses into his humorous, prankster side. Influenced by his love for both folk music and for French impressionistic music, Kodaly was able to paint in impressionistic orchestral colors the comedic tale of a Hungarian style Don Quixote in his Háry János Suite. Stravinsky captivates listeners with his ballet music suite The Firebird. Even without the ballet theater, Stravinsky’s music summons the imagination to delight in Russian fairy tales of the magical glowing bird that can be a blessing or a curse to its owner. Daniel Hege, principal guest conductor Pre-concert conductor chat begins at 6:30 and student performances at 6:45. All are invited to attend the post-concert reception and meet the musicians and conductor! http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?organ_val=37848&pid=8223422&agency=TULSA_PAC

Direct from Broadway, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a “big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare (Tony® nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is “The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!” (New York Magazine).

Tulsa Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Tulsa Children’s Chorus will premiere a new orchestral work by Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, Chickasaw classical composer, on Sunday, June 11 at the 2017 OK Mozart International Music Festival. The foundation of the newly commissioned piece titled Muscogee Hymn Suite, is from within historic Creek Indian church hymns. Muscogee Hymn Suite is an adaptation and orchestration of traditional Muscogee (Creek) church hymns in the Muscogee (Creek) language. Joining TSO and Tulsa Children’s Chorus will be classical baritone soloist Grant Youngblood and traditional Mvskoke singer Curtis Scott, conducted by Gerhardt Zimmermann. A unique artistic result of European contact is the American Indian church hymn. As missionaries traveled across the early United States into Indian Country, they became one of the first to document Native languages and create translations of the Bible and other Christian texts, including church hymns. This blending of music and language lead to a new series of a hybrid music, composed by tribal citizens. For Southeast American Indians (Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek and Seminole) this beloved hybrid‐style of music is now more than 200 years old with a vast repertoire. American Indian church hymns are unmistakably native and is the third category of traditional Southeast American Indian music, alongside stomp dancing and timeworn folk songs.

Tulsa Pop Kids Inc. was created in 2017 to provide support within our community specifically to promote literacy programs for children through Pop Culture and entertainment. All proceeds raised during the Tulsa Pop Culture Expo will help our efforts in promoting that cause including providing comics to local elementary schools and to the children in St. Francis Medical Centers. Celebrity Guest Announced So Far: Catherine Hicks - Catherine appeared in several high profile films through the early 1980s, in leading and supporting roles whilst also appearing on television. Films included: Death Valley (1982), Garbo Talks (1984), The Razor's Edge (1984) and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). She played "Dr. Gillian Taylor", opposite lead actor William - Shatner, in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), a cult sequel to the popular Star Trek films. In the late 1980s, she played the lead role of "Karen Barclay" in Child's Play (1988), a film that remains highly regarded in the horror genre. It was on the set of this film that Catherine met her future husband, Kevin Yagher, with whom she had a daughter in 1992. Despite her obvious talent, big movie roles never seemed to find their way to her in the early 1990s. In spite of this, she worked consistently, appearing in Liebestraum (1991), Dillinger and Capone (1995), the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Redwood Curtain (1995), and a small role in the semi-high profile movie, Turbulence (1997). Andrew Grams returns to Tulsa to guest conduct Tchaikovsky’s emotional Symphony No. 6 the “Pathétique.” This program will also feature Tim McFadden (principal trumpet) and Celeste Frehner (English horn) on Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, a short atmospheric piece which has become one of Copland’s most performed works. The program will close with Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. Based on four hand piano works by Weber, which Hindemith and his wife often played, this colorful work is a sketched series of movements that remains perhaps Hindemith’s most popular work.
