Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

May 8, 2021 | 2 - 9 p.m.

The Rose District, in partnership with Vega & Treviño Consultants and Supermercados Morelos, Oklahoma’s largest Hispanic grocery chain soon to open in Broken Arrow, is bringing back its Cinco de Mayo Fiesta! Come join us Saturday, May 8 from 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. for a celebration of Hispanic culture. There will be authentic Mexican food, dancing, music, shopping, a kid’s zone, and more! Mark your calendars for a day full of family fun! The City of Broken Arrow seeks to positively impact the community at large by ensuring they are purposeful and authentic in vendor and entertainment inclusion of the Rose District’s 5 de Mayo Fiesta, by purposefully including Oklahoma’s fastest-growing minority, the Hispanic community. To achieve this, Vega & Treviño Consulting have been brought on to help with obtaining vendors, entertainment acts, and food options rooted directly in the Hispanic community. CDC guidelines will be in place. If you or a member of your party are showing symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed, we ask that you refrain from attending this celebration. We appreciate your cooperation.

Pet Food Drive & Adoption Event

May 10-14, 2021 May 15, 2021 | 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Dave's RV in Claremore is hosting a Pet Adoption and Pet Food Drive! Dave’s RV will be collecting bags of dog and cat food the entire month of May. The bags must be new and unopened. Everyone that brings in a 30 lb. bag or more of dog or cat food will receive their choice of $500 off the purchase of an RV, or 15% off parts. Dave's has partnered with Oklahoma Alliance for Animals, Skiatook Paws & Claws and Zoi’s Animal Rescue for this event. Come out and help the dogs and cats find their forever homes. All food collected will be evenly distributed between the three organizations. Last fall they collected over 4,000 pounds of food! Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is a Tulsa based 501c3 nonprofit collaborative organization established in 2004. OAA’s primary purpose is to bring together the people and resources needed to overcome pet homelessness, abuse and neglect. Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is dedicated to reducing pet overpopulation, encouraging responsible pet ownership and promoting the humane treatment of animals through community collaboration and education. Zoi's Animal Rescue although founded in 2005, the seed was planted several years before when Mike and Debbie Stellas rescued two lab puppies from being euthanized. They both had severe mange and the female had a birth defect, which made her left front leg deformed. They were named Zeke and Zoi (Zoi in Greek means "life".) Because of Zeke and Zoi, Debbie and Mike decided to start Zoi's Animal Rescue. Since 2005, ZAR has rescued and adopted out over1000 dogs and cats. Zoi’s is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-breed animal rescue group that is based in Claremore, OK. Skiatook Paws & Claws was formed in October of 2013 by a young lady who had a dream to make her local animal control facility a "no-kill" shelter by pulling every deemed adoptable dog and cat and adopting them out to loving forever homes. She teamed up with two of her friends and together, they formed what SPACAR is today. We have found homes for over 2,000 animals in our surrounding area and have successfully kept the Skiatook animal control facility no-kill for four years. They are currently in the process of becoming an official 501c3 organization. Food can be dropped off at Dave’s RV throughout the entire month of May. To wrap up the Pet Food Drive, Oklahoma Animal Alliance, Zoi’s and Skiatook Paws & Claws will be on site from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, May 15th with adoptable cats and dogs.

THE CENTENNIAL OF THE TULSA RACE MASSACRE AND BEYOND

May 26-29, 2021 | 1:30 - 3 p.m.

Samuel Sinyangwe is a policy analyst and data scientist who works with communities of color to fight systemic racism through cutting-edge policies and strategies. Mr. Sinyangwe has supported movement activists across the country to collect and use data as a tool for fighting police violence through Mapping Police Violence and to launch Campaign Zero, a comprehensive platform to end police violence. At this year's Symposium, Mr. Sinyangwe will provide perspective on how policy and data can provide a lens into how looking back at historical events can shape the work needed to improve the future. Specifically, Mr. Sinyangwe will illuminate how local and national data can inform how looking back at the vents of the Tulsa 1921 Race Massacre should shape how we move beyond 2021 and consider the next 100 years in Tulsa. This year, you will have the opportunity to attend the Symposium virtually or limited, in-person attendance. Be sure to register now and take advantage of the Early Bird Registration which will end on April 20, 2021.
