Walk MS: Tulsa

April 6, 2019

Walk MS: Tulsa is an annual walk event held every spring to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. The walk has a 1 mile and 3 mile option for participants to choose from with rest stops along the long route. Sponsors and vendors are set up at the event, giving away promotional items and information about their companies. There is music by a local DJ and food on-site, usually donated by local restaurants. The funds raised go to research for Multiple Sclerosis to determine a cause of the disease and to develop better treatment for those affected; education about how it can affect a person's life, family, and friends; and programs and services for those living with MS and their caregivers.

Rogers County Medicine Disposal

April 6 & 20, 2019 | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

April in Rogers County is a time to get rid of waste.Along with this, Volunteers for Youth will be set up to take your old or unneeded medicine at two events, April 6 in Claremore and April 20 in Oologah. We will be partnering with Oologah,Community Connections, Rogers County Sheriffs Department and students from RSU Criminal Justice Society to host these dates. Disposing of all unused and unneeded medications is one of the easiest ways to keep your family from misusing medicine not prescribed for them. Next to marijuana, prescriptions medications are the most common drugs teens and other family members are abusing. For this years event, we will also be accepting needles, thanks to the Partnership for Success funding. All needles should be placed in sharps containers or other hard plastic like laundry or bleach bottles. Needles are never accepted at the permanent disposal boxes located throughout the county at Claremore, Oologah, Catoosa, Chelsea and Inola Police Departments,as well as Rogers County Sheriffs Department. Parents and other family members are in the best position to reduce access to prescription drugs by locking up medicines and properly disposing of expired or unused medicines. Claremore- April 6, 9 am to 12 pm Claremore Industrial Park off Lowrey Oologah, April 20, 9 am to 12 pm The Gazebo Parking lot in Oologah across for Police Department For questions about this event, contact Amy Graham @ eat7@eau7eav7eaw7. When: Saturday, September 7, 2019 Where: River West Festival Park 2100 S Jackson Ave. Tulsa, OK Times: 7:30 am – Day of Run registration 8:00 am -- Activities begin 8:30 am – 5K and 10K begin 9:45 am – Awards 10:00 am – Ceremony honoring local children who have faced a cancer diagnosis 10:45 am – Walk After the Walk—lunch and continued fun for the entire family!! 9:00am-1:00pm Blood drive Registration is $35 for the 5K ($45 for the 10K) and includes walk registration, finisher’s medal and Event T-Shirt. (T-Shirts can only be guaranteed for those registered before August 16, 2019.) For the Walk only, registration is $10 for adults, and free for kids 15 and under. T-shirts may be purchased by walk only registrants for $15. The Gold4Kids Walk and 5K is an event for the entire family! It is more than just a walk and race as we pause to honor our local childhood cancer fighters and survivors and remember the ones who have been taken. What better way to honor kids than to have lots of fun activities for the entire family? Food, entertainment, games, and music will all be a part of the festivities. Most cancer fighters can expect to experience hair loss. Some embrace the bald, while others collect wigs and/or hats and scarves, which may range from sedate to silly. We encourage all participants, and our runners especially, to wear their favorite head gear, whether functional or goofy, in honor of our kids!! Day of race registration and packet pick up will begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5k and 10K race, chip timed on a certified course, will begin at 8:30. Other activities for non-runners will also begin at this time. At 9:45 we will present race awards and then honor our children who have been diagnosed with cancer with a short ceremony. After a short walk around the beautiful River West Festival Park, we will return to continue the fun and activities. For questions, please contact eat23@eau23eav23eaw23.

Will Rogers Tribute Wreath Laying Ceremony

November 2, 2019 | 10 a.m.

The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club is celebrating 120 years in existence and will be hosting their annual tribute to Will Rogers, Saturday at 10 a.m. Nov. 2, 2019. The Wreath Laying Ceremony by the Pocahontas Club will begin at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in the Rotunda. The ceremony begins with the club members, dressed in their Cherokee tear dresses and shawls around the bronze statue of Will Rogers. After the Wreath Laying Ceremony, there will be a musical tribute in the Will Rogers Theatre honoring Will Rogers. We are honored to have Jana Jae, the first lady of country fiddle, performing the "Fiddle Tribute," sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts. Jana's one-of-a-kind style blends country fiddling, western swing, bluegrass, pop, and the classics and was inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2015. In addition, Becky Hobbs, Pocahontas Club member and piano-pounding honky-tonk songwriter for celebrities such as George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and many others will also entertain us. Becky is also co-writer of Alabama's "Angels Among Us," and in 2015, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. She also, co-produced, co-wrote, wrote and sang the signature song "Let There Be Peace" in the short film "Nanyehi," which was inducted into the Oklahoma Movie Hall of Fame. We may even get an opportunity to view the short film while we are in the theater. Shortly, after the “Musical Tribute," there will be a reception in the Rotunda. There will be a Haute Hat Contest, in remembrance of Will’s wife, Betty. Join in or cast your ballot. Betty Blake Rogers was famous for always wearing her Haute hat.
