An Evening with Branford Marsalis

October 6, 2019 | 7:30 p.m.

Presented By: Tulsa PAC Trust Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz Master, Grammy Award winner and Tony Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. After more than three decades of existence with minimal personnel changes, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. After the Grammy-nominated Upward Spiral, on which guest vocalist Kurt Elling was seamlessly integrated into the group, the Quartet has followed up with The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, its most emotionally wide-ranging and melody driven collection to date. John Zeugner captured the impact of the Quartet in live performance in a recent concert review, calling it “casually confident, professional, cerebral, and supercharged with energy. The Branford Marsalis Quartet…was all of those adjectives and more.”

Heart of BA Arts And Crafts Festival

October 9, 2019 | 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Since 1980, the Broken Arrow Main Street Merchants Association has been deeply rooted in the growth and prosperity of a rapidly evolving downtown district, while working diligently to ensure the beat goes on. The Annual Heart of Broken Arrow Arts and Craft Festival is a great part of that effort, providing support for their mission and growing stronger every year. The annual festival will be hosted at the Broken Arrow Central Park Community Center Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry to the event is free, and everyone is welcome. Approximately 100 vendors will be found with unique and incredible arts and crafts to shop at this one-of-a-kind market. Association President and Committee Chair, Laurann Farris, takes pride in the incredible, handmade wares that are available each year. “We have so many unique and intriguing items,” she said. “Christmas is coming, and our show is close!” In its 26th year, The Heart of Broken Arrow festival will have some returning vendors from previous years, and many new ones with room to grow. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor is invited to call and reserve one of the especially large booth spaces, that are usually around 12ftx12ft. “Most people appreciate the bigger booth space,” said Laurann. “They can accommodate the tables so much better.” Some of the vendors already included this year will display beautiful stained glass, incredible metal art, exquisite quilts, jewelry, lawn décor, succulents, bird feeders and houses, cutting boards and so much more! New to this year’s event will be on-demand screen printing. Handcrafted wood burning fire pits can also be found, as well as new and innovative creations from local artists. “We always make sure we have a wide selection of handmade items available,” says Laurann. “It’s a great opportunity to support local artists and businesses, as well as to see some of the finest handmade arts and craft items offered in Green Country.” Concessions will be available, and as always, treats will be available for purchase from the Amish Bakery. Proceeds from the annual festival benefit the Broken Arrow Main Street Association, which was founded to promote community spirit and vitalize downtown Broken Arrow. They additionally extend funds to local nonprofits and organizations in need, such as Blue Star Mothers. Funds also ensure the continuation of other events throughout the year, as well as providing lights for members’ storefronts and banners for the Main Street light posts. The Main Street Association has always been charged with supporting business and community in the downtown district. “There are new people coming to Broken Arrow all the time,” said Laurann. “We want to make sure that BA stays on the map.” The festival is handicapped accessible, and lots of parking is available. If you would like more information on becoming a vendor at The Heart of Broken Arrow Arts and Crafts Festival or would like more on attending the event, email Laurann at eat2@eau2eav2eaw2, or call (918) 251-1591.

SHALOMFEST

October 13, 2019 | 12 - 3 p.m.

Temple Israel’s ShalomFest for the Next Generation Twenty five years ago, the leadership of Temple Israel came up with an idea to showcase Jewish life to the greater Tulsa community. The idea was to expose and educate the Tulsa community on Jewish life. The aim was to highlight traditions, rituals, music, and foods in such a way as to demystify Judaism and share its blessings with all. That is precisely what Temple Israel has done for the past quarter century. In keeping with this theme, after twenty five years of incredibly successful ShalomFest events, we have decided to take a new approach to Temple Israel’s ShalomFest. Jewish life exists in more than just one afternoon each year; the calendar of holidays and traditions ebbs and flows throughout the seasons of the year. As we are stepping into a new generation for Temple Israel’s ShalomFest, we look to engage Tulsa. Envisioning Temple Israel’s ShalomFest for a new generation has not been an easy task, and will likely continue to evolve over the coming years. As a means of streamlining, while providing more opportunity and more variety, the Temple Israel ShalomFest brand is growing into multiple events. In the coming months, Temple Israel’s ShalomFest will consist of three events. The first event will coincide with the end of the Jewish High Holy Days, and our annual harvest festival. Sukkot, or the “Festival of Booths” begins at Sundown on Sunday, October 13. In preparation for this week-long Festival, Temple Israel looks to the greater Tulsa Community to help us in creating our Sukkah, booth, and welcoming in the holiday. Join Temple Israel on Sunday, October 13, from 12:00-3:00pm as we decorate our congregation’s autumn festival booth. Temple Israel’s ShalomFest Sukkah Build and Lawn Party Sunday, October 13, 2019, 12:00-3:00pm With a new vision for Temple Israel’s ShalomFest, we will welcome the public to help decorate our sukkah with family friendly activities and all sorts of lawn games. Temple Israel’s Sisterhood Judaica Shop will be open for all your Jewish shopping needs. Temple Israel’s Clergy Team will provide engaging learning opportunities in the sanctuary. Temple Israel’s ShalomFest will continue in December, during the winter holidays, as we welcome the greater Tulsa community to come out and participate in celebrating our first night of Hanukkah. Located just off of Utica Square, where the holiday festivities will already be in full swing, Temple Israel will be hosting a First Night Hanukkah Celebration on our front lawn! Temple Israel’s ShalomFest Hanukkah Party Sunday, December 22, 2019, 4:45-5:45p.m. On the first night of Hanukkah, as the sun is setting, we will have a first night lighting of a large hanukkiah, holiday candelabra, on the front lawn. Winter holiday treats and hot beverages will be provided. The stories and songs of Hanukkah will be shared, and there will even be a bit of a Hanukkah special treat for the children in attendance! And we are not finished yet! Temple Israel’s ShalomFest will once again reappear, as the spring awakens in Tulsa. Temple Israel is very proud of the musical flavor in Tulsa. We are also very attached to Jewish music. Both of which are alive in Temple Israel! Join Temple Israel for our spring Jewish Music Festival. Temple Israel’s ShalomFest Jewish Music Festival Saturday, June 13, 2020, 3:00-8:00p.m. As the warm evenings of spring and summer approach, the Temple will host a music festival with our local Jewish artists, and Jewish musicians on the Temple lawn and in the parking lot. We may even highlight a headlining act! We will host activities for the kids, while food and beverage will be aplenty! As we rethink Temple Israel’s ShalomFest for a new generation, we hope that you will come along for the journey, helping us to make Jewish life, Temple Israel, and all of Tulsa, a special place to be. Arts and Crafts Benefit Bazaar

October 26, 2019 | 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The 47th Annual Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), Alpha Rho Chapter, Arts and Crafts Benefit Bazaar will be held Oct. 26, 2019, at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow. From 9 a.m.-4 p.m., guests will enjoy shopping with over 87 vendors, and admission to the event is free to the public. The bazaar offers an astonishing selection of goodness, including a bake sale by the United Methodist Women. Guests will have the added benefit of access to the St. Stephen’s UMC Pumpkin Patch, well-known for their beautiful pumpkins and gourds available for purchase. Concessions will be offered throughout the day, with options for breakfast and lunch. ESA President, Linda Jones, and member Nancy Stanley are co-chairs of the bazaar and are eager to share their excitement. “We have something for everyone,” said Nancy, “and many, if not most, are all handcrafted and homemade.” Jewelry, pottery, weavers, skincare, and more are included in the many treasures that will be available, just in time for shopping for the holidays. “There are lots of great gift ideas,” said Linda, “all unique and homemade.” Activities for the kids will be available to entertain them, in addition to a fun trip to the pumpkin patch. Guests will also love the used book sale and silent auction. Guests do not have to be present for the end of the auction but will need to provide a phone number in case they win. Silent auction items will include vendor items, as well as exciting gift baskets. All proceeds from the event support the many philanthropic commitments of ESA, including St. Jude and Hope for Heroes. The sorority’s sole endeavor is to work to give to others and is completely volunteer-driven. The bazaar is one of their largest fundraisers for the year. “I just love it,” said Nancy. “I love doing this; I love meeting the crafters, and just doing something for someone else.” ESA contributes greatly to many local organizations as well, including BA Neighbors and Meals on Wheels. There are many giving hands involved in presenting the bazaar, including some help from local youth and the Boy Scouts. With so many organizations receiving aid as a result of this event, it takes a great deal of support. “It’s not just one group making money for themselves,” said Linda. “There are many people who benefit from this event.” Vendor space is still available and can be reserved by calling Nancy at (918) 251-0617 or by email at eat12@eau12eav12eaw12. More information on the bazaar can be found on Facebook at @ESAbrokenarrow.

Our 3rd Annual Day of Trick-Or-Treating is taking place on Thursday, October 31st, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bring your children, grandchildren or family members dressed in their favorite costumes to walk through our facility and get all the candy! Our staff will be in costumes and provide a fun, safe and clean environment. Invite all of your friends and family for an indoor, family-friendly Halloween experience! If you plan on bringing a large group, please call ahead so we can accommodate accordingly (918) 994-4000. We are located at 9709 East 79th St. Tulsa, OK 74133.
