This Spring,the Bartlesville Area History Museum is proud to present: “Our Oily Past” on display from April 1st through July 1st, the exhibit takes visitors on a journey exploring the successes of H.V. Foster and how he turned visions of wealth into revolutionizing the nation’s energy industry by taking over the development of the oil and natural gas Blanket Leases which was then controlled by the business, the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil company (I.T.I.O). The exhibit will feature various artifacts from local oil companies like I.T.I.O and youngsters or the “young at heart” may enjoy our history of oil coloring station and gander through BAHMs turn of the century Nelson Carr One-Room School! Museum admission is free, but donations are always welcome. No reservation is necessary.

Explore the intersection of poetry and imaginative expression , sustainability, and creativity with local Black Moon artist Jiji Coul! Campers will craft unique poetry zines using recycled materials and vibrant hues from botanical and food dyes, turning nature’s beauty into verse. Jiji Coul is a Tulsa-based artist who specializes in oil paints and natural materials, and often repurposes items to give them a second life. She expresses her creativity by exploring themes of self-perception and inspires herself daily by embracing activities that challenge and scare her. Jiji also teaches private art lessons, fostering connections with people of all ages to help them navigate life creatively.

Embark on a whimsical journey with mixed media artist Kaci Burr, where literary worlds come alive through the enchanting art of crafting book nook dioramas. This camp encourages creativity and storytelling, offering a unique hands-on experience that combines literature and visual arts. Kaci Burr has been an artist, instructor, and event organizer in the Tulsa area for nearly a decade. Her preferred mediums are preserved insects, taxidermy specimens, and miniatures. Her experience working with ELL students and families uniquely allows her to connect with and teach a diverse group of people, no matter the age or language.

Explore the fascinating world of plant-powered music and sound painting with local music recording artist Mark Kuykendall. Campers delve into botanical beats and use natural materials to create sonic landscapes, blending art and science for an immersive musical experience. Mark Daniel Kuykendall is an Oklahoman, artist, and producer. His work is generally characterized by his production style of melding electronically manipulated field recordings with dusty attic 8mm films. Graduating with an audio engineering degree from Full Sail Real World Education in 2003, he returned to his home town of Tulsa, Oklahoma to begin his journey into the world of sound. Over the past decade he’s constructed “Wild Mountain Studios” in the Osage Hills, founded ambient music label “Unknown Tone Records” in 2011, and hosted numerous courses and taught at local art camps focusing on found sound, collage, and bio sensory feedback (plant music).

Come explore the art and science of rocks, minerals, fossils, and artifacts at Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society’s Annual Rock, Gem and Mineral and Jewelry Show. This year’s show will be in the Exchange Center at the Expo Square on Saturday, July 13th, and Sunday, July 14, 2024, it is the perfect opportunity to learn something new and shop an assortment of unique vendors. Show highlights include rocks, minerals, jewelry, fossils, a fluorescent room, beads, crystals, a touch and feel table, working exhibits, displays, and a free kid’s zone. Hours are 9-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday.

Learn the fundamentals of oil painting while drawing inspiration from vivid tablescapes featuring fruit, colorful vessels, and distinct textiles. This introductory course is designed for individuals with little or no prior experience in oil painting. Participants will work with specially sourced non-toxic oil paints and odorless mediums to explore color theory, mixing, value, composition, and more. Explore techniques unique to this medium under the guidance of professional painter Cheryl Capps Roach. The instructor will break down the basics to provide a deeper understanding of how to interpret a tablescape still life on a two-dimensional canvas. All supplies are provided; adults 55+.

Think of this as an art appreciation course with a twist…and a clasp! Each week, participants will create a blended jewelry design inspired by a selected painting or sculpture form the Philbrook collection. The class will first visit the galleries for an interactive discussion in the presence of the artwork to learn more about the piece and the artist who created it. Drawing inspiration from color, theme, style, and more, participants will assemble a beaded personal accessory as an artistic reflection. No prior jewelry-making experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Participants will learn basic beading and wire-working skills as well as tool techniques and related vocabulary. Participants will take away lessons about the importance of environmental conservation while creating unique S.T.E.M. projects they can take home with them.
