School House Rock Live!

February 4, 2022 | 7 p.m.

A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage in Schoolhouse Rock Live! The Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math and more through clever, tuneful songs is not only making a small-screen comeback, it's lighting up stages everywhere – from school multi-purpose rooms to university and regional theatres all around the country. Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such songs as "Just a Bill," "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly" and "Conjunction Junction." With its minimal band, set, costume and flexible cast requirements, Schoolhouse Rock Live! may be performed in virtually any space, bringing its infectious zest to a cross-generational audience.

The live performance revolves around Tom, a nervous young schoolteacher, who turns on the television to calm himself down and is visited by three aspects of his personality who remind him how learning can be fun. Originally aired on the ABC television network from 1973-1985, then revived in the ‘90s and ‘00s, Schoolhouse Rock was a collection of clever, animated shorts that taught academic topics, including grammar, math, civics and science.

The musical is directed by TCC Theatre Director, Mark Frank and the Musical Director is Laura Cowan. The musical follows, Jeff played by Drew Sears, and Hunter, played by Matthew Gwinner, two struggling writers, hear about a new musical theatre festival. However, the deadline for submissions is a mere three weeks away. With nothing to lose, the pair decides to try to create something new with the help of their friends Susan, played by Ana Nunez, and Heidi, played by Sophia Krist and Mary, played by Angeline LeLeux-Bajzek on the eighty-eights. With the cast in place, Jeff and Hunter begin a conversation about what to write about. Eventually, Jeff suggests they write about what to write about. They make a pact to write up until the festival's deadline and dream about the show changing their lives. [title of show] -- taken from the space on the festival's application form which asks for the "[title of show]" -- follows Hunter and Jeff and their friends on their journey through the gauntlet of creative self-expression. In the span of 90 minutes (with no intermission) they write and perform their show at the festival and learn lessons about themselves as people, friends, and artists. [title of show] is, above all, a love letter to the musical theatre -- a uniquely American art form -- and to the joy of collaboration.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

February 28, 2022

In this brilliant re-imagining of the classic Broadway hit, Tevye, a Jewish milkman in early 1900s Russia, sees his three eldest daughters married, each one moving further from traditional ways, and must cope with the growing anti-Jewish sentiment in his country. Featuring such classics as “Matchmaker,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” it’s a timeless piece of musical history that continues to inspire audiences year after year.
