    But, being an ­independent, family-owned repair shop is not always easy when faced with large ­insurance providers.     Though it is usually against the law for insurance companies to require a ­customer to do business with a specific repair shop, “steering” (as the practice is sometimes referred to) still happens. Liz notes that insurance companies sometimes make it very difficult for their customers to avoid having repairs done at partner auto shops. Some providers insist the customer takes their vehicle to a preferred, recommended or partner shop for an estimate. Or, the provider may give the impression that only repairs done at a preferred shop will be guaranteed or paid in full.

    Randy encourages customers to learn the details of their insurance policies, and resist making decisions if they feel pressured or rushed. Of course, when one relies on their car for daily life, it is not easy to keep level-headed. And the stress of an accident, not to mention injury, magnifies the tension.
