The Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma, was built and dedicated in 1938 by the citizens of Oklahoma in memory of their favorite son, Will Rogers. Known as the cowboy philosopher, Will Rogers was a true cowboy, performer, trick roper, and entertainer. Known first for his amazing rope tricks, he later became known for his sharp wit and humor. His career bloomed from an on-stage performer to that of a movie star, newspaper columnist, and radio commentator. Loved by millions, he was one of the most well-known figures in the early 20th century. The Museum, located along Route 66, features 12 interactive galleries, two theaters, a hands-on children’s museum, and beautiful green spaces. Come learn about the most popular humorist in American history.
In 1935, following the tragic death of Will Rogers, the US Highway Association dedicated Route 66 as “The Will Rogers Highway.” The road carried this name on travel guides, road maps, and promotional materials nationwide. In 1952, the road was rededicated as part of a promotion for the Warner Bros. movie “The Story of Will Rogers,” starring Will Rogers Jr. A caravan of stars traveled the entire route, placing bronze plaques at each state border to designate the highway as The Will Rogers Highway. Learn more about this forgotten history at the “Will Rogers Highway: Route 66” exhibit, now on display. You won’t find this history anywhere else along the route.
The Will Rogers Memorial Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Will Rogers or to plan your visit, go to www.willrogers.com.
