Cherokee Nation to Demonstrate Traditional Stickball at Rogers County Fair

The Rogers County Fair, in partnership with the Cherokee Nation, will host Field Trip Friday on September 18, featuring free demonstrations of traditional Cherokee stickball.

The Cherokee Nation will be in the County Green Area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. demonstrating the game and sharing its history and cultural significance. The event is free and open to the public.

What is Cherokee Stickball?

Stickball is a traditional Cherokee game with deep cultural roots. Historically, games could involve large numbers of players and serve important purposes within Cherokee communities. Today, stickball continues to be practiced as a way of preserving and sharing Cherokee culture and traditions.

Stickball is often associated with the origins and development of lacrosse, as both games involve teams competing to control a ball using sticks. While they share similarities, Cherokee stickball has its own distinct traditions, equipment, gameplay and cultural significance.

What is Field Trip Friday?

The Field Trip Friday event will provide attendees with an opportunity to see stickball demonstrations firsthand while learning more about the Cherokee Nation's connection to the game.

“We are excited to partner with the Cherokee Nation to bring this experience to the Rogers County Fair,” said Wendy Woody, Rogers County Fair Co-Manager. “Field Trip Friday gives our community and fair visitors the opportunity to experience Cherokee culture and learn about a traditional game that has a fascinating connection to a sport many people know today as lacrosse.”

The Rogers County Fair encourages families, students, educators and members of the community to attend the demonstrations and learn more about the history and tradition of Cherokee stickball.
