To get any job done right, it helps to have the right tools, and when it comes to finding the right tools to work on your yard or lawn, look no further than TNG Power Equipment in Claremore.

TNG is a locally-owned and operated company, where customers can expect top service and top products.

“We specialize and service just about anything that has to do with outdoor power equipment,” explained TNG owner Tim Johnson. “We carry trimmers to seeders, sweepers, generators, power washers, chain saws, go karts, push mowers and riding mowers, so just about any tools you would need to make your home and yard look great, we’ve got it.”

Longtime customers may notice that Johnson’s business is in a new location, one which allows him more space for his growing business.

Ferris, Snapper, Magnum, Columbia, Ybravo are just a few of the brand name mowers carried at TNG Power Equipment in northeast Oklahoma. Although it’s rare for an item to not be in stock, TNG owner Tim Johnson said that specialty items may be ordered.

“Our old office was downtown, and I think we had maybe 1,800 square feet in all,” he said. “The new building is 12,000 feet, with nearly 4,000 square feet taking up the showroom floor, which allows us to show more of the products we offer.”

Johnson said he initially got into the lawn care and power tool business because of his father, Howard.

“I’d been working at a steel business in Kentucky, and my father had bought an outdoor power tool business,” he said. “He gave me a call and said he wanted me to be closer to home and told me about his (new) business,” he said. “So, in 2001, I moved back to the area and went to work with him at the business, eventually taking it over when he semi-retired, and I’ve been here ever since.”

Several recognizable and respected brand-names in everything from handheld power tools to mowers and riding mowers are always in stock, Johnson said, but specialty items are available to order upon request.

“We usually have about 275 to 350 mowers in stock, so it’s very rare that we’d ever be out of stock in mowers,” he said.

Among some of the better-known brands of mowers that Johnson carries are Dixie Chopper, Dixon Ybravo, Snapper Pro/Ferris, Walker, with Ferris being amongst his personal favorites.

“It’s been my experience in the last 18 years that one of the best mower brands overall on the market is Ferris -- nothing is smoother to ride than a Ferris, as far as riding lawnmowers go,” he said. “It’s got true all-wheel suspension, so it’s like driving a car in your front yard, instead of riding on a mower. It stands alone from the competition, and it’s really the best value for the money.”

However, for those with smaller yards, TNG carries a selection of push mowers, such as the Ybravo, known for its simplicity, having a low weight, optimal cutting speed, excellent cut quality, superior bagging, low cost and ease of service.

When it comes to service, Johnson said that’s what sets him apart from the competition.

“Service is definitely something we pride ourselves in,” he said. “We go above and beyond when it comes to that, and if anybody looks us up on Google or Facebook, we’ve got 5.0 stars on Google, and are rated at 4.9 stars (out of five) on Facebook, so clearly, our customers feel like they’re taken care of.”

Johnson said he guarantees “in and out” service to his commercial and industrial customers, with blade sharpening available while you wait.

“Anyone can sell something, but service is our No. 1 priority,” he said. “Our selection is good, but our service is the best.”

Johnson’s head mechanic, Chris Nicholson, concurs.

“Tim goes out of his way to take care of his customers – all of us do,” Nicolson said. “We treat our customers well, and I’ve been told by many of them that we are beyond hospitable. We work our hardest to satisfy whatever need they have, and when they come in here, whether it’s their first time or they come in regularly, they’re like family to us.”

Nicholson, who is certified to work on Briggs and Stratton, Kohlers and Kawasaki, said the range of items he repairs is diverse, but he always “looks forward to the challenge.”

“People will bring me everything from small items, like a weed trimmer or grass trimmer, on up to bigger items – I’ve worked on go-carts and UTVs before, and of course, our bread and butter, lawnmowers. I’ve worked the small tractors, the big diesel machines – just about everything.”

Even if an item hasn’t been purchased from TNG, Johnson said he’s happy to have his mechanics work on it “as long as it has a motor.”

“One of the more unusual things we get requests for are to work on a boat with a mud engine on it – we get several (requests) for them, although we don’t sell them,” he said.

Open year-round, TNG sells equipment to individual homeowners as well as to those who use them commercially, and to municipalities. Pick up and delivery is available.

“If someone purchases a mower, we do have delivery, because a lot of people don’t have a pickup truck or a trailer,” he said. “We typically deliver out to about a 60-75 mile radius, although sometimes we do make exceptions and deliver a little further out than that.”

In addition to Johnson and Nicholson, other TNG staff include Dylon Moss, mechanic, Larry Silver, salesman and Johnson’s father, Howard, who is in sales and handles pick up and delivery services.

TNG is open from 8 a.m. until “the last customer is taken care of” Monday through Saturday.
