When was the last time you walked through the doors of a pharmacy and someone greeted you by your first name? In today’s climate of big business, it may feel like you’re nothing more than a prescription number. When you walk in the doors of Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy, however, you’ll feel right at home with Pharmacist Jared Bennett and his staff of five who take the time to know their customers. At Bennett’s, you’re more than a number on a prescription bottle. “We want our customers to feel like family,” says office manager and store co-owner Stephanie Bennett, “so walking in our pharmacy should feel like coming home.”

Jared Bennett, who graduated from OU in 1997, opened his pharmacy this past June. “There is no other place I would’ve considered opening this pharmacy,” says the 1991 Claremore High School graduate. Before opening his own pharmacy, Bennett spent over 16 years with Drug Warehouse, as a pharmacist from 1997 to 2005 and as a district manager from 2005 to 2012. “With the closing of the Drug Warehouse in Claremore,” he adds, “it was a perfect opportunity to get back home.”

Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy has that hometown feel. When you call to refill a prescription, you don’t get a recording asking you to punch this number or that one. Instead, you’ll get a friendly voice on the other end of the line, and all prescriptions are filled in 15 minutes or less. “Having a personal relationship with our customers is important,” Stephanie adds. “Getting a prescription filled by someone you know and someone who knows you is important.”

The pharmacy carries name-brand and generic prescriptions, has a fully stocked over-the-counter section and will special order items upon request. “For example,” says Stephanie, “we’ve had requests for all-natural products like ginger pops, which help with nausea associated with morning sickness. We can usually have the special order items in the very next day.”

Gift items, greeting cards, snacks and cold drinks can also be found at this hometown pharmacy, which accepts Express Scripts and Tri-Care (some local pharmacies do not). “We accept all insurance,” says Stephanie, “and we match prices.”

Transferring a prescription is easy. “We do all the work,” she adds. “You just bring in your prescription bottle and we do the rest. You don’t have to feel uncomfortable about transferring to our pharmacy.”

For the tech-savvy, you can download the pharmacy’s app and refill your prescription via your smart phone. “It’s easy,” says Stephanie, “but if you want us to download it for you, just bring your phone by the pharmacy. It’s fast and the app allows you to scan the barcode on your prescription bottle, which sends the refill order directly to us.”

They’ve only been open since June 18, but the Bennetts are already seeking ways to give back to the community. In the works is a plan to help customers on a fixed income who use the Pelivan for transportation. “When they ride the Pelivan to our pharmacy to pick up a prescription,” says Jared, “we will give them a ticket to return home. It saves them a few dollars but when you’re on a fixed income, it helps.”

The pharmacy will also be hosting a charity canned food drive in November. Anyone who brings in five non-perishable food items will receive a 10 percent discount on over-the-counter purchases. Prescriptions are not included. All food items will be donated to a local church food bank.

“At Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy,” says Stephanie, “we are dedicated to providing every patient with excellent customer service and care every time they visit our store.” The pharmacy is open seven days a week: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., with a convenient drive-thru.
