Most people who experience knee or hip pain know that joint replacement surgery is a viable option to deal with their problem. Many people who experience shoulder pain, however, are unaware that they too have options. According to Brian Chalkin, D.O., of The Orthopaedic Center, “Unfortunately, many folks do not realize that shoulder replacement surgery can be a highly successful solution. They continually live in chronic pain because they are unaware of the treatment options available.”

Dr. Chalkin doesn’t want anyone else to miss out on living life to the fullest due to shoulder pain, and that is why he is presenting a free seminar on shoulder pain and the latest treatment options available. The seminar will be held Friday, September 14, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma Heart Institute – Lecture Hall at Hillcrest Medical Center, 1120 S. Utica in Tulsa.

“The goal of the seminar is to educate and inform the community on chronic pain and limited motion of the shoulder, and how patients can relieve their symptoms,” said Dr. Chalkin. “Shoulder replacement is similar to other joint replacements such as knees and hips, but is less common, and therefore many people simply do not know about it.”

Dr. Chalkin explains that shoulder pain can have a number of causes – earlier traumas in a person’s younger years such as dislocation of the shoulder, previous surgeries for rotator cuff problems, labral tears, and degenerative or rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms include not being able to reach as far as you’d like; not being able to comfortably comb your hair, scratch your back, or use a vacuum; and suffering from chronic, extreme pain in the shoulder area.

Tornier, a global medical device company and one of the leaders in shoulder replacement technology, will sponsor the seminar. Since its founding approximately 70 years ago, Tornier’s “Specialists Serving Specialists” philosophy has fostered a tradition of innovation, intense focus on surgeon education, and commitment to advancement of orthopaedic technology stemming from its close collaboration with orthopaedic surgeons and thought leaders throughout the world.

The seminar will include stories of patients who have had their shoulder pain successfully treated, as well as open discussion with Dr. Chalkin, who will answer any questions patients may have. Attendees may bring their spouse or a guest, and lunch will be served. The seminar is free, but space is limited. Call (877) 585-0125 to register.

“This comprehensive seminar is an excellent free resource for the community and will cover the causes of chronic pain and limited motion in the shoulder, as well as expose the audience to treatment options, solutions and rehabilitation,” says Dr. Chalkin.

Dr. Brian Chalkin has performed hundreds of shoulder replacement operations. He specializes in the treatment of upper extremity conditions which affect the shoulder, elbow and hand. Dr. Chalkin graduated from Rutgers University and from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine with honors. Following his orthopaedic surgery residency at Oklahoma State University, he completed the coveted Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. He lectures nationally and teaches Oklahoma State University Orthopaedic Surgery residents new cutting-edge techniques in hand, elbow and shoulder surgery. Dr. Chalkin is also credited with the development of new orthopaedic implants used internationally. Dr. Chalkin joined The Orthopaedic Center in 2004.
