One of the signs of aging is a loss of volume in the face, especially in the apples of your cheeks. Now, a new product, Juvederm Voluma XC, can help you regain that youthful appearance, according to Dr. Dwight J. Korgan with A New Image Laser Cosmetic Laser Center in Claremore.
The injectable gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area, giving you a subtle lift and helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile for up to two years in patients over the age of 21. “This product lasts longer than previous products by Juvederm, which only lasted up to a year,” says Dr. Korgan. “Voluma XC is also only approved at this time for use in the cheek area.”

As we age, we lose elasticity in our faces, leading to sagging of the skin. With the use of Voluma XC, you see natural-looking results. The product contains a modified hyaluronic acid (HA) made from a naturally occurring complex sugar.

“We started using the product last fall, but it has been available in Europe since 2005,” says Dr. Korgan.

According to Dr. Korgan, this product does not clump like others do and is less expensive than surgical procedures, including those that remove fat from other places in the body, which is then injected into the cheeks. “It’s less invasive and the results are much better because injecting fat can leave a lumpy texture.”

A local anesthetic is included in the product itself, but a topical can also be applied for those who need it during the multiple smaller injections required during the procedure. Side effects, according to Dr. Korgan, are moderate. “There can be temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, swelling, bruising, pain, redness and discoloration, but the most common are redness and swelling. After 24 hours, you should be able to resume your normal activities.”
Pregnant women or those allergic to one of the compounds in the product should not get these injections. “It’s also wise to avoid exercise and getting overheated within 24 hours of injection,” he adds.

While the product is more expensive than some other fillers, the results do last longer. “About one-half of those who get the procedure need an adjustment a month later,” he says.
A clinical study by Allergan revealed that 90 percent of people were more satisfied with their facial appearance at six months and 76 percent of people still experienced increased satisfaction two years after treatment. Until March 1, A New Image is offering a special price on the product.
