Attention all cowboys, cowgirls and everyone else! It’s that time of the year again! Time to dust off your hats and boots and gather together to celebrate Owasso’s heritage – it is time for Trail Days 2010, sponsored by Owasso Chamber of Commerce with this year’s presenting sponsor, Urgent Care of Green Country.

For those not familiar with the origins of Trail Days, this annual event gleans its name literally from “Owasso,” an Indian term meaning “the end of the trail.” Trail Days is a citywide celebration that encompasses many different events, all designed to bring families together in a fun and festive environment.

Wranglers get a head start this year. The Trail Days rodeo, an IPR sanctioned event, gets things going Friday night, April 30 and Saturday night, May 1. This rodeo brings in the best cowboys and cowgirls from across the country to compete for prizes, rankings and prestige. Rarely do local residents get the chance to see such professionals in our own backyard. Don’t miss the opportunity! Bull riding, barrel racing, and of course, a rodeo queen pageant make this one of the most beloved events during Trail Days. Tickets are a bargain at $5 for adults and $3 for children when purchased in advance, and just $7 and $5 when purchased the nights of the rodeo. Tickets can be purchased at the Owasso Chamber of Commerce (315 S. Cedar), McDonald's (76th St. N. location only), Bank of the Lakes, BOK (96th & Garnett location only), and RCB Bank (both locations).

Following in the lineup is the ever-popular Trail Days Carnival, put on by Sam’s Amusement. Sam’s has been the official carnival for Trail Days for ten years. Carnival discount sessions are Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, May 8 has two sessions from noon to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, May 9 from noon to 5 p.m. Ride passes can be purchased for $15 advance and $20 at the carnival. Ticket outlets are the same as the rodeo, but include both Reasor's locations. Each pass is good for one session during the carnival. The carnival is in the Owasso Transportation parking lot at 76th St. N. and Highway 169. Children can also participate in a sanctioned Pedal Tractor Pull on Saturday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the carnival parking lot. This competition is free, and the winners will go on to the state championship.

One of the newer activities for Trail Days is Bingo Night. Trail Days Bingo will be held Friday, May 7 at the Bailey Education Foundation located inside Bailey Medical Center, 106th St. N. and Garnett. Doors open at 6 p.m. for concessions, and bingo will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $25 for four cards or $10 each. Prizes awarded range in value from $15 to hundreds, so come join in the fun!

Everyone loves a parade, and Owasso’s Trail Days parade is always a hit. It kicks off Saturday, May 8 at 9 a.m. in front of City Hall on Main Street and proceeds south. Come early for the best seats and enjoy the sounds of the Pride of Owasso band, the Akdar Shriners antics and much more.

Please note a change in location this year for the Art, Home and Business Fair. The show will be held at the Owasso Mid-High, located at 8800 N. 129th E Ave. It begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and runs until 4 p.m. Admission is free. Enjoy delicious Church’s Fried Chicken at the concession stand while you browse through a vast array of business booths and fabulous vendors. Don’t forget to bring your kids by to see Professor B. Looney and his incredible balloon creations.

Pet Fest is always a huge success and will once again be a part of the Trail Days activities. Held on the north side of the Owasso Mid-High, Pet Fest begins at 2:15 p.m. with Channel 6 anchor Craig Day helping with the pet contest. Categories include cats, exotics, best costume, pet/owner look alike, cutest, best trick, funniest, longest/shortest tail, largest/smallest, and most Trail Days spirit. Lots of free giveaways for your pet await everyone who attends Pet Fest. A big thanks to Strathe Veterinary Hospital for sponsoring this event.

One final Trail Days event will be the Trail Days Fun Run. This run is hosted by the Owasso Family YMCA. It is a 5k sanctioned run, and there will also be a one-mile family fun run/walk. Please contact the Owasso Family YMCA at (918) 272-9622 for more details and to participate.
