Spend Your Summer Acting Out

If you or someone you know has been bitten by the acting bug, now is the chance to let them see if the stage is for them.

Summertime doesn’t need to be an endless barrage of mindless activities. For some Owasso residents, the summer will be filled with action and adventure, characters from long lost worlds, and enjoyment that only comes from engaging in one of the oldest pastimes, acting.

The Owasso Community Theatre (OCT) presents its 2011 Summer Workshop in July. “We are thrilled to have our summer acting camp led by world-renowned London actor Chris Middlebrook,” said OCT board member Chris Larson. The acting camp will be held July 25-29 at Rejoice Christian High School at 12200 E. 86th St. N. from 1 to 4 p.m. each day.

Chris Middlebrook has appeared in shows throughout the world, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “Whistle Down the Wind,” and “Romeo and Juliet,” and he has worked with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Chris currently teaches drama at Theatre Arts in Broken Arrow and Center Stage Performing Arts in Jenks. As if that doesn’t keep him busy enough, he also teaches private classes throughout Tulsa, at Tulsa Public Schools and for Owasso Community Theatre.

As part of the camp, Chris will bring his unique perspective and teaching skills to guide students through various areas of acting, including improvisation, script work, and character development. “At the end of the week, participants will present a small performance showcasing the skills they have learned,” explains Chris Larson. “We are so excited to host Chris Middlebrook because of his amazing teaching ability. His use of games and techniques really brings out even the most introverted of students.”

Mr. Middlebrook has been working with the Owasso Community Theatre for the past six months, doing workshops throughout the year. The summer workshop will provide all residents with the opportunity to gain from Chris’s expertise. There will be no limit on the number of students accepted into the workshop, but you must register prior to the class. You can do this by calling BAM entertainment at (918) 899-8819 or emailing eat1@eau1eav1eaw1. You can call the Owasso Community Theatre as well at (918) 237-1656. Cost for the workshop is $80.

Chris Larson is no stranger to the advantages theatrical students gain while going through this process. She has a daughter who is a past Owasso drama student, and Chris simply can’t say enough when it comes to the benefits of learning to act. “Theater is a great self esteem and confidence booster,” she says. “It helps people come out of their shells and brings out their creative side, in addition to the excitement that comes with auditioning and actually getting the role.”

Another benefit to acting is the exposure it creates between generations. Youngsters will often act onstage with senior citizens, giving young and old alike a chance to better understand each other. It creates a chance for everyone to get to work together and have fun.

If you or someone you know has been bitten by the acting bug, now is the chance to let them see if the stage is for them. For more information or to register for classes, call Owasso Community Theatre at (918) 237-1656.
