Salsa Tasting Festival at the Oklahoma Aquaurium

By: Andrea Leitch | Category: In Our Communities | Issue: August 2019

The Oklahoma Aquarium will host its first Salsa Tasting Festival on Saturday, August 17, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Salsa Tasting Festival celebrates the diversity of flavors this summer for the thousands of families who visit the aquarium annually.

“We plan to host more cultural events at the Oklahoma Aquarium, and we’re excited to partner with local Hispanic organizations and restaurants for this event,” says Liz Medrano, the event coordinator for the Salsa Tasting Festival.

Activities include a jalapeño eating contest and more fun throughout the day. The event will culminate in a salsa tasting contest when attendees vote on their favorite salsa in three categories: Mild, Hot, and Anything Goes. The salsa contest is open to restaurants, home chefs, amateurs, salsa manufacturers, and local farmers who are interested in showcasing their products.

“I’m excited for our guests to try new restaurants and get a variety of options,” Medrano says. “Mexican and Spanish cuisines are so diverse that all local restaurants will offer their own unique flavors and special touches to their salsas.”

Salsa contest winners will receive awards, a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium, and of course, bragging rights as the first winner of the annual Salsa Tasting Festival in Jenks, Oklahoma.

“As a Hispanic, I’m really excited to reach a diverse community and engage with guests who share a common love of salsa,” Medrano says. “It will be the hottest event this summer.”
