David and Sara Wilson and store mascot Diego welcome you to their party room at Pet Stop in Owasso.
Have you ever invited a bird to your birthday party? Diego, a blue and gold macaw, is a real party animal. Serving as the mascot for Pet Stop in Owasso, he loves attending children’s birthday parties in the store’s specially-designed party room. As Pet Stop celebrates 12 years in Owasso this month, you can bet Diego won’t be the only one in the mood to celebrate.
Pet Stop owners David and Sara Wilson are feeling quite blessed these days, after recovering from a devastating fire at the store last year. Their completely redesigned facility has been open for six months.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support and invite them to come see us, whether they are animal owners or not. We appreciate the people of Owasso so much,” said Sara.
Owasso citizens will surely enjoy the store’s new layout and special features. One of the most popular additions has been the birthday party room. Children can bring their own critters, or invite the Pet Stop animals to join in the fun. Diego is a frequent partygoer, as is a 6-foot-long boa constrictor. “The kids just invite him to scare their parents,” Sara laughs. “Most of them choose puppies, kittens or hamsters.”
Pet parents can also use the room to host parties for their four-legged family members.
Children and adults alike enjoy the darkened fish room, which is both exotic and relaxing. According to David, Pet Stop offers more freshwater fish than anyone in the area and is one of the few stores to offer saltwater fish and plants. He explains that modern aquariums aren’t the labor-intensive setups they used to be. “The new filtration systems really take the work out of owning fish. We even offer pre-treated fresh or salt water, so you don’t have to wonder if you’ve treated it correctly or worry about damaging your fish.”
Water gardeners will find pond comets and koi for their outdoor water gardens, as well as a full line of chemicals, food and supplies. Tracee Harrington is the new fish expert at Pet Stop and offers years of experience in the field.
The Pet Stop staff undergoes continual training to ensure they are up-to-date on their animals and products. “Brenda Bryan has been with us for 11 years and Melissa Corn, our general manager, has been here for over 10 years,” said Sara. “Our future long-term employees are wonderful as well,” David added.
The staff’s extensive knowledge and genuine concern for animals make all the difference at Pet Stop. “The main product we offer is customer service,” said Sara. “Our employees really care about our customers and their pets. We’ll carry the purchases to the car for you, answer your questions, and help you figure out what’s best for your animals.”
Owning a pet store was a perfect career choice for the Wilsons. David is a lifelong animal lover, and Sara recalls how during her childhood she would always bring home injured animals and nurse them back to health. Once she even cared for a snake that had a BB stuck in him.
An Owasso native and 1992 graduate of Owasso High School, Sara was working at a Tulsa pet shop when she realized the need for one in her hometown. In 1996, Sara and David opened their 3,200-square-foot store in the Cornerstone Shopping Center. Today they are located beside Owasso 10 Theatre near 86th Street and 129th East Avenue, in an 11,000-square-foot area filled with furry, feathered and fishy fun. “It’s just unbelievable how much we’ve grown,” said David.
Pet Stop will have a storewide celebration Saturday, June 7, featuring coloring and photo contests, hamster ball races and special promotions. David and Sara hope you stop by to see the animals and everything else Pet Stop has to offer.
