Digital detective Doug Gorden works with state-of-the-art equipment to uncover hidden computer secrets.

His work could be part of a TV cop show. A digital forensics examiner taps away at computer keys until a key piece of evidence unravels a mystery. “What I do is very much like the kind of things you see on TV,” laughs Doug Gorden, owner of Secure Investigative Services. “But without the drama.”

Secure Investigative Services is a full-service company that offers digital forensic services, hard drive recovery, e-Discovery consulting, background investigations, latent fingerprint acquisition and Oklahoma statewide process servicing.

After working as a computer programmer for 20 years, Doug decided he needed to take his expertise to a higher level where he could make a difference in people’s lives. Now the digital forensics investigator helps businesses, individuals and legal entities when they need to uncover the deep, dark secrets hidden within all types of digital devices.

Sometimes it’s detective work to analyze a suspect employee or past employee’s computer. “Even companies with sophisticated IT departments call me when a sensitive situation calls for the utmost discretion and accuracy,” he explains.

The skill sets and equipment that he brings on site allow him to uncover hidden files, deleted files, file fragments and other data that others don’t even try to look for. Image files can be scanned to identify pornographic images with near 100 percent accuracy.

Sometimes his work is a helping hand to someone who thought his computer had gotten the best of him. Not long ago, a small business owner asked for help with his two laptops. One older model with problems that made it inoperable had all the business’s old software and important data. Doug made a forensic image of the old computer, revised the operating system, and then installed everything on the new computer. In just a few hours, the man was back in business.

Another customer had received threatening emails from an unknown source. It didn’t take long for Doug to trace the emails to the sender.

At times, his work involves preventing a problem. “A lot of people sell or donate their old computers without realizing what information is still stored inside them,” says Doug. Social security numbers, tax records and other personal information are often present even after a hard drive has been “wiped” with off-the-shelf software. Doug can uncover layer after layer of data and purge hard drives to Department of Defense standards, thus making any data recovery impossible.

Doug’s credentials, including a private investigator’s license, enable him to be one of only a dozen or so people in the state qualified to offer services to law enforcement agencies. His cutting-edge industry technology is the same that is used in law enforcement forensics throughout the world. And just like on television, he uses goggles and a black light in certain investigations.

There is yet another side to Secure Investigative Services. Doug’s mastery of computers and passion for child safety come together at the Family Internet Safety seminars he offers free to local churches and organizations. The seminars are designed to help parents protect their children from cyber predators, and to identify and report computer crime.

One of the key points Doug stresses is to caution parents on what could happen when kids are allowed to use the Internet as a playground. Every time a child takes a picture with a modern phone and uploads it to a social networking site, the phone’s built-in GPS system automatically identifies his or her location to anyone who wants to know. No parents would intentionally put their child in such a dangerous position. But this happens every day without realizing it.

When a legal, corporate or personal computer situation calls for security, Doug Gorden at Secure Investigative Services can handle the task. No job is too large or too small. The number to call is (918) 850-8882.
