The last two months of the year are a whirlwind of food, fun, family and friends – ‘tis the season to be jolly! But often, holiday joy can dissipate the moment your feet hit the scales right after the New Year. According to Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center, this is an all too common phenomenon.

“The typical weight gain for Americans over the holiday is six to eight pounds,” says Malissa, also pointing out that this doesn’t have to happen. Using a few preventative measures, anyone can enjoy the holidays without incurring the unpleasant and unwanted baggage that often come with them.

To help people avoid holiday gain, Malissa offers tried and true wisdom. First, she advises everyone to eat six small meals over the course of the day, with breakfast being the most important. During these meals, she suggests that carbohydrates be limited and taken in mostly early in the day. Most importantly, she stresses the importance of drinking plenty of water. “Everyone should drink three quarts of water per day,” she says. “We suggest 32 ounces of water before each meal.” Malissa reminds those who already have weight issues and would like to lose weight during the holiday that BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center offers personalized weight loss plans and exercise regimes all year long.

Exercise is of utmost importance during this period, especially for women over 40. “Our metabolism slows after 40,” she says. “Women at this age should exercise six times a week, one hour per day.” She points out that walks are an excellent form of exercise, and reminds everyone who walks outside to put on sunglasses, a visor, and medical-grade sunscreen, as too much sun exposure is a major cause of skin aging. “Some sun exposure is good, as we all need Vitamin D,” Malissa says. “But if you have had too much fun in the sun, it will show on your skin.”

If you are concerned about previous sun damage on your skin and want to look your best for the holidays, Malissa reports a new skin care system available at BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center: Obagi New Derm System. As time goes on, exposure to the sun’s harmful rays causes several problems, including the slowdown of cell turnover, breakdown of elastin and collagen production, and increase of skin discoloration. The Obagi New Derm System is designed to address the skin at the cellular level, helping it restore itself to a younger and healthier state. Malissa also points out one of the major advantages of the system, as opposed to many previous skin treatments, is that it can be used on any skin tone, even on those who have dark complexions. “Obagi New Derm resurfaces the skin, addressing acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and other issues,” Malissa says. “The results are amazing.”

Obagi New Derm System joins an already wide array of skin treatments available at BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center designed to help bring out the glowing person beneath your skin, not only for holiday festivities, but for the year beyond.
