Holiday Happenings

Communities throughout Green Country will offer a variety of holiday activities to tickle your fancy.

For many, Christmas means flying reindeer, the birth of a holy child, sparkling lights and a jolly man in a red suit. Over the years, Christmas in America has evolved to include gift giving, a decorated tree and Santa Claus as Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. In fact, Christmas is celebrated in some fashion in more than 90 percent of American homes and is recognized around the world – sometimes as a holy day and sometimes as a secular, cultural festival.

Since the actual date of Jesus’ birth is unknown, the date coincides with ancient Roman solar festivals and the winter solstice. A central figure in many holiday celebrations – Santa Claus – is thought to have evolved by combining the real 300 A.D. Saint Nicholas with elements from pagan Nordic and Christian mythology. Artists in the 19th century media are responsible for creating the image we know today of a jolly fellow dressed in red with a white beard.

Whether your holiday spirit is stirred by reverent nativity scenes, elves and reindeer or twinkling lights, communities throughout Green Country will offer a variety of holiday activities to tickle your fancy.
