Let Wine Down Spirits in Claremore help with the beverage selection at your upcoming party.

Melinda Kennedy, co-owner of Wine Down Spirits in Claremore, shows off some of the wines available for purchase, including several local varieties.

Wine Down Spirits opened in Claremore’s Renaissance Shopping Center in May of 2012. Since that time, it has been serving the Claremore community by providing a great selection of wines, beers and spirits, as well as ­excellent customer service.  

    After working in the insurance industry for more than 30 years, Melinda Kennedy decided to help her son Marcus pursue his dream of owning a liquor store. Being from Claremore and familiar with the community, they opted to open the only liquor store on the west side of the railroad tracks. The Kennedys, along with partner Gary Miller, have done very well with the store in the year and a half it’s been open.

    “Marcus had wanted to own a liquor store since before he was even old enough to do so,” said Melinda. “This was an ­opportunity for us to do something together that I knew he really wanted to try. And on top of how nice it’s been to work with my son, we are very happy with how successful the store has been.”

    The laidback atmosphere of the store with its large wood display cases lining the walls is very welcoming to shoppers. Several racks line the center aisles, making it easy to browse the wine options in the clean and ­comfortable store. With everything from whites, reds, champagne and dessert wines, there is sure to be something for everyone. Some of the local varieties include wines from Summerside Vineyards in Vinita, Sparks Vineyard in Sparks, and Whispering Vines in Tulsa. In addition to the wines it sells, Wine Down Spirits offers a very large selection of beer ­including Leinenkugel’s, Tank 7, Boulevard and Samuel Adams, as well as local brands, such as Marshall and the popular Rock Hard Root Beer made in Oklahoma City. And of course, all the popular brands of liquor and spirits are also available at the store.

    “We try to carry a little bit of everything to make sure we are serving all of our customers,” said Melinda. “We are also able to special order just about anything we might not have in stock. And, depending on the availability with our distributors, we can usually have those special orders here the next business day.”

    The large selection isn’t the only thing different about Wine Down Spirits. It also offers great weekly specials. Every Tuesday, customers get a discount on all wine and every Wednesday, a discount on liquor. The owners offer these specials as a way to show their appreciation to their loyal customers.

    “We love our customers,” said Melinda. “There are so many extremely nice and sweet people in this ­community. We have ­customers who check in when they are going to be out of town to let us know not to worry about them, and I have even had a customer send me flowers on my birthday. It’s great to know there are ­people who really do care.”
