On Sunday, June 5, Bixby’s First United Methodist Church (15502 S. Memorial) will host its 9th annual Car Show and Gospel Sing. This free, family-friendly event is a great opportunity to hear some live music and see dozens of classic cars.

The Bixby Car Show and Gospel Sing was started nine years ago by Ron and Lucinda Casteel, members of First United Methodist Church. Ron, who has a ’56 Chevy and a ’67 Firebird, was a regular car show participant, and the Casteels wanted to do a show that would bring the Bixby community together.

“Bixby is a great classic car show town – people here really love to show off their cars,” says Lucinda Casteel. “And Bixby does so much for the community. This event has gotten larger every year, and it has really become a community outreach for the church. This year, FUMC’s music ministries have stepped up to host the event.”

The car show will feature many restored classic cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other “interesting” vehicles, Casteel says. “We had over 50 cars last year, and we’re hoping to have even more this year. We’ll also have some sprint cars and some dragsters new for this year.”

Meanwhile, live music will be performed in the church gymnasium and broadcast outside. Featured music will include gospel, southern gospel, and bluegrass from church talent, local talent, and some surprise artists.

Admission to the Car Show and Gospel Sing is free, and there’s also no charge to register to win one of the many door prizes that will be given away. Concessions will be available for purchase, and will include burgers, chips, hot dogs, and drinks. You’re also welcome to bring your own food and have a picnic on the grounds.

Craft and vendor booths will be on hand, offering jewelry, cosmetics, woodwork, candles and ironwork. The event will feature abundant supervised activities for the kids, including a play area, a Jupiter Jump, and face painting.

This year, there is no charge to enter a vehicle in the show, although donations will be accepted. Awards will be given out in several categories, including crowd favorite. Vehicle registration begins at 1 p.m. the day of the event and runs until 3 p.m., when the Car Show begins, or you can pre-register by contacting First United’s church office. Parking for show cars will be on the football field just west of FUMC’s north parking lot.

“There’s something for everyone at the Bixby Car Show and Gospel Sing,” says Casteel. “Just come out to hear the music and enjoy the show – it’s a great family outing.”

The Car Show and Gospel Sing is Sunday, June 5 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 15502 S. Memorial in Bixby.
