Do you vow every January to take better care of yourself and yet return to the same poor habits time after time? You’ve probably heard Albert Einstein quoted as saying that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Dr. Wanda Harris, owner of The Herbal Lady, understands that concept. She feels that many people don’t know how to get started and where their focus should be.

“Americans often mistake disease care for health care,” she explains. “Health care isn’t
what you do to treat a disease; it’s what you do to stay healthy or regain health when it has been lost.”

While drugs and surgery may be used to treat disease, they don’t improve your overall health or make up for a poor diet, lack of sleep, lack of exercise or excessive stress. “We need to change the focus and improve our health for a lifetime, not just temporarily.”

An annual checkup is a great way to begin improving your life. Dr. Wanda has a wide variety of tools to get to the root of your health concerns and says almost everyone can benefit from going through a detoxifying and cleansing process. “So many different problems that people experience health-wise can be traced back to toxins in the body.”

One of the first symptoms experienced from toxic overload is fatigue and an overall lack of energy. Other issues include serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Suggested follow-up treatments may include an iridology reading, reflexology, an ear cleaning or treatment with the parasite zapper. The Herbal Lady also offers ionic foot detoxification, which is a great way to rid the body of chemicals, processed foods and toxins caused by poor diet, smoking, or chemotherapy or radiation.

Dr. Wanda shares her top four prescriptions for better health.

First things first: Take out some nutritional health insurance by adding basic supplements to your diet. While people may be familiar with the benefits of fiber, probiotics and mineral supplements, many aren’t sure what might be needed beyond that. Dr. Wanda can personalize a program of nutritional supplements specifically for your needs and often suggests the Nature’s Sunshine Super Trio to get started on nutritional supplements. “An apple a day may not be enough to keep the doctor away. Nature’s Sunshine ‘health care prescriptions’ will help you stop taking care of your diseases and start taking care of your health,” says Dr. Wanda.

Second: Get some color in your diet! The whiter food is, the more likely it is to be refined. Dr. Wanda feels refined foods such as bleached flour, refined sugar, shortening, polished rice and chemical additives ought to be avoided and says issues like arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, anxiety and fatigue can all be the symptoms of illness caused by processed foods. “Look for green leafy vegetables, the browns of whole grains, bright reds and blues of berries and the orange of squash to find the nutrients you need for good health.”

Third: Move! It’s time to get off the couch and get some exercise. Doing something physical can combat the ill effects of long hours spent working at a desk job, and sitting on the couch or in front of the television only compounds our sedentary lifestyle. The key is finding something you enjoy doing such as gardening, walking, dancing or one of Dr. Wanda’s favorite recommendations, using a mini trampoline. “Just a few minutes on a mini trampoline gets the lymphatic system flushed, which helps the immune system. A few more minutes can be as beneficial as jogging a mile. It’s a valuable piece of equipment that can be purchased inexpensively.”

Last: Get some rest and relaxation. Being short on sleep often leads us to pump ourselves up with caffeine or sugar. The stress of a never-ending to-do list keeps us from sleeping, and the cycle begins again. All of that adds up to poor health. Taking time for fun and relaxation helps reduce stress, making you healthier.
