Germany is well known for excellent food, wines and beers. Some of us are lucky enough to experience German dining at the source, but an overseas trip is not within everyone’s budget! Fortunately, there is now a restaurant that provides traditional, authentic, made-from-scratch German food – Heyka’s Heimat, located in Broken Arrow.

“Heimat” means “home” or “homeland,” and a home-comfortable atmosphere is exactly what owner Heyka Zambrano, General Manager Ginny Cooper and the rest of the staff strive to provide. The wait staff is very conscientious about customer service, and each waiter or waitress keeps an eye out for all customers, not just those that are seated in their section. The restaurant is small and cozy, and the dining area is surrounded by German memorabilia.

Many people tend to think strictly in terms of sausage and sauerkraut, and though you can order some excellent samples of this fare, there is much more to the menu. Appetizers include potato pancakes with applesauce, herring filets, fresh fried potatoes and fried pork, for starters. Customers can enjoy a variety of soups and salads before dinner, as well.

Main dishes are listed by their proper German name, but there is, of course, an English description of each delicious dish. For example, a Zwieblspaetzle are homemade noodle drops sautéed with onions and knockwurst and baked in a creamy cheese sauce. A Sauerbraten is a dish that consists of marinated eye of round, and is served with red cabbage and salt potatoes. Many other dishes give customers a choice of beef, chicken, brisket, pork and ham, served either with fried or salt potatoes.

“We have people that have come in and told us that they are ‘eating their way through the menu,’” says Ginny. “The menu offers such a broad selection, many people do choose to eat something different every time.”

Of course, there is quite a variety of sausages and prepared in different ways, from the spicy German hotdog to Currywurst – bratwursts slathered in ketchup and curry powder, and served with sauerkraut and fried potatoes. In addition to the regular fare, Heyka’s Heimat does offer six different kid’s meal options. Beverages include regular soft drinks as well as some German wines and beers.

Never forget to leave room for dessert: German chocolate cake, Apple Strudel, Schwarzwaelderkirschtorte (black forest cherry cake) and Rote Gruetze mit Vanillasauce (tangy mixed fruit in a creamy vanilla sauce) are all waiting to tempt your taste buds.

Owner Heyka Zambrano is originally from a region north of Hamburg, and was professionally trained as a chef in Germany. She not only sees that every bit of food prepared is of the highest quality, but also makes sure her prices are affordable for everyone.

“We want everyone walking out full and happy,” says Heyka. “Good food, fair prices and a team-spirited wait staff helps us to accomplish that goal.”

The restaurant is also available for catering needs, either in a specified location or with a room provided. Heyka’s Heimat is the only German restaurant in Broken Arrow, and is located at 1009 North Elm Place, on the northeast corner of 71st Street and Elm Place. Hours and days of operation are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday to dine in or carry out.
