The Jenks Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting artist applications for the 5th Annual Art on Main event. (L to R): President Annette Bowles, Director of Member Services Melissa Wright and Director of Communications & Public Affairs Brittany Sawyer.

Art on Main, Jenks’s signature fall art show sponsored by the Jenks Chamber of Commerce, is looking for Oklahoma artists who wish to exhibit and sell their work.

Art on Main is a one-day outdoor celebration of the visual and performing arts. The primary focus of the event is displaying quality art and providing audiences the rare opportunity to meet, interact and purchase art from the individuals who have created it.

“We’ve already received a great response from interested artists,” said Chamber Director of Member Services Melissa Wright. “To make this show outstanding and diverse, we want as many Oklahoma artists as possible to submit applications.”

Art on Main is a juried show, and only the top 100 applicants are selected to participate. Artists are asked to submit three photographs of their work, which the independent jury committee evaluates piece by piece. The jury, unaffiliated with the Chamber, consists of six to eight individuals with different backgrounds relating to art. Acceptable mediums include drawings, glass, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture and wood carvings.

“The show continues to maintain a strong following of repeat artists. This year we would love to include fresh new artists as well,” said Chamber President Annette Bowles.

If you would like to be a part of this successful show, download an application from www.jenkschamber.com, under the “Events” section. Deadline for submissions is June 30, 2008.

The mission of Art on Main is to create access to a broad array of arts experiences, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expansion of cultural life in our state.

The 5th Annual Art on Main will be held Saturday, October 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in historic downtown Jenks. Two blocks of Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic and filled with local artists showcasing and selling their original works. The show will also include children’s activities such as face painting and “make and take” booths, delicious food, wine tasting from ten Oklahoma wineries and great jazz music.

“This is the only show of its kind in the region,” said Annette. “Everything – the art, food, wine and music – is purely Oklahoma-made.”

Thousands attend the all-ages event each year to enjoy the fun, festival-like environment. “People bring their family and pets and spend the entire day. They love the casual, relaxed atmosphere,” said Melissa.

Smooth jazz saxophonist Grady Nichols will be returning as this year’s musical headliner. Joesf Glaude, whose performances include a mixture of classical guitar, harp-guitar and jazz combo, is also on the roster.

Art on Main is supported by local sponsorship and a large group of volunteers, including Jenks Boy Scout Troup 214. According to Annette, the show would not be possible without the help of the Oklahoma Arts Council. “Art on Main started in 2003 and within five years has become a huge regional event that everyone gets excited about,” she said.
