The dedicated OSU Medical Center cardiologists are here for you and those you love. It’s their mission. From the most advanced treatments for complex cardiac problems, to quick and easy screenings, OSUMC Cardiology beats heart disease every day, one beat at a time. “We have doubled our staff and are dedicated to serving patients with the utmost of quality care,” said David L. Brewer, M.D., Chief of Cardiology at OSU Medical Center.

“Our commitment to the full implementation of acute and secondary prevention guideline-recommended therapy is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients,” Brewer added. “We are committed to improving the quality of our cardiovascular care and know the number of heart attack patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing incidence of heart disease, especially in baby boomers entering the increased cardiac disease age.”

OSUMC’s Cardiac Center and staff continually focus on improving the quality of care they provide to heart failure patients. The Center’s goals are to save lives and to reduce health care costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks.

“Our new, most advanced equipment in our Stress Lab is impressive,” shared Dr. Brewer.

“We are using treadmills that are the best on the market today. Their enhanced safety features offer greater reliability and these units are by far the highest performing treadmills around. These precise machines are connected directly to the internet, allowing our cardiologists the ability to instantaneously read the test results,” explained Paul Knell, RN, OSUMC CV Specialist. “We’ve had such positive feedback regarding the ease of using the machines from our City of Tulsa employees – the firemen and police men and women who are tested regularly at OSUMC.”

OSUMC also offers the latest in ultrasound testing. The new machines are extremely user-friendly. The image quality is outstanding, as are the machines’ maneuverability, explained Carlton Hartwell, OSUMC Cardiac Sonographer. “Our new ultrasound machines’ imaging platform provides our cardiologists with excellent computational power and image manipulation as well as additional capabilities that help us better care for our patients.”

OSUMC is building for the future. With cardiac disease on the rise, the medical center is investing in the most state-of-the-art Cath Lab equipment. The Cath Lab is under complete renovation now. New imaging equipment from GE is being installed in each room, including Interventional X-Rays, designed for a wide range of cardiovascular and interventional imaging, allowing OSUMC the ability to offer a broad range of clinical applications and treat a diversity of patients and cardiovascular conditions.

“Another advantage of our Cardiac Center, besides our state-of-the-art equipment, is our proximity to our award-winning ER Department. If a patient needs a catheter or other procedure, we can admit them directly from our ER and, within minutes, have the patient in our Cardiac Center. This is an advantage over institutions whose cardiology center is not closely situated to their Emergency Department. When it comes to cardiac care, especially during an emergency, minutes matter,” shared Dr. Brewer.

“While serving patients within OSUMC is important, sharing our advancements in cardiac care with patients in rural Oklahoma is another part of our mission and focus,” said Dr. Brewer. “It’s equally important for us to train younger physicians, equipping them to serve patients and share what we know in communities outside of Tulsa. Our cardiologists regularly visit outlying communities including Drumright, Tahlequah, Okmulgee, Claremore, Talihina, Fairfax and Cleveland.”

Whether it’s serving patients within the medical center or caring for our outlying communities, OSU Medical Center offers advanced cardiovascular care. Combining the expertise of nationally recognized cardiovascular physicians with compassionate, personalized care and the latest in technology, OSUMC physicians are dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of heart disease, every patient, every time.
