Hideaway Salon is tucked away in a corner in the shopping center at 71st and Elm, but discovering it is worth the effort. Owner Tammy Calsing has been busy putting the finishing touches on a salon-wide remodel, and the result is a charming atmosphere reminiscent of old-time Paris, right in the heart of Broken Arrow.

Tammy shared that the salon has been in its current location for over a decade, and since she purchased it six years ago, many additional services have been offered, so she wanted to update the building. “We have added large windows across the front of the building to bring in natural light, added additional private rooms for tanning, massage and facials, and had many of the walls custom finished with an old world look,” she explained. “We are really thrilled with the way it turned out and the atmosphere we have created.”

The Parisian theme is warm and welcoming, and you really do feel hidden away from the busy life outside the front door. Tammy says her goal was to create a local all-inclusive salon offering hair care and spa services.

“Things have changed and progressed so much since I graduated beauty school and started my career in 1984,” said Tammy. “The advances in hair care, products, styling tools and spa services make it fun to come to work every day.” Tammy left the business for a season to raise her children and worked in interior design for a while. But her true love kept calling her back. “If you are meant to do hair, and you enjoy it, you’ll miss it and come back.”

The stylists at Hideaway Salon keep up to date on their techniques and services through continuing education, both in-salon training and attending hair shows. Tammy and stylist Donna Lee will travel to St. Louis this month for additional training for Chi products and equipment used in the salon. Donna, herself a former Chi educator, has traveled all over the United States and Europe educating stylists and performing platform styling. “Chi was the founder of the ceramic flat irons,” Donna explains. “Their dryers use ionic heat and not radiant heat, so they are much better for the hair. Chi coloring is also a non-ammonia product, so it is safe to use during pregnancy.”

Hideaway offers all the expected hair services. They also have stylists who specialize in the care of ethnic hair, including shampoo and blowout, braids, cutting, extensions and relaxers.

A new treatment the salon offers is a keratin treatment that is gentle enough to use on all hair types: color treated, chemically processed, bleached or highlighted. It also reduces up to 95 percent of frizz and curl, leaving the hair shiny and smooth. Results typically last up to three to five months.

In addition to hair care, Hideaway Salon offers a wide variety of special services. Tanning is available, along with lots of new tanning lotions for purchase that have Strivitan to reduce fine lines, slim, firm and bronze your skin. The salon also offers facial treatments, manicures and pedicures, including natural and synthetic nails using the new OPI lacquer nail polish. This hard-wearing polish is cured under a light and will last about two weeks. Hair extensions and eye lash extensions are available for those events that demand an extra special look.

Speaking of special events, Hideaway Salon also offers specials for brides and wedding parties, and is offering a prom package throughout April. “We love to do wedding parties, and we have a great time getting the girls ready for prom,” said Donna. “Our prom package includes an updo, makeup application, pedicure and full set of nails.”

Additional services at the salon include body sugaring and wraps, lunchtime facial peels that will not disturb your eye makeup, and a wide variety of massage therapies. The expected massage techniques such as hot stone, Swedish, deep tissue and trigger point are joined by Reiki therapy, which is a form of body energy work. Chair massage is also offered and is a great treatment to get rid of a headache or stiff neck.

“Our new private rooms allow us to work with clients who might otherwise avoid being out in public, such as women whose religion requires a head covering in public or patients recovering from cancer, who need hair care or would like to try hair extensions while their own hair grows back in,” says Tammy. “We also offer diabetic pedicures with specialized products and expert care.”

Hideaway Salon is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome, and after hours appointments can be scheduled by calling the salon. Gift certificates are available.
