Rhonda Short is a certified personal trainer who works with clients at Body Defined Fitness at 81st and Memorial in Tulsa. Rhonda trains people from all walks of life, but she is particularly interested in helping women in their mid-life stage who are going through menopause. “Menopause can cause muscle loss, weight gain in the abdomen and hips, hot flashes, and often a loss of motivation,” says Rhonda. “There is such a strong need for mid-life management. Exercise is wonderful for relieving stress caused by menopause, as well as easing the symptoms. Nutrition is also a big part of that – I can help you choose foods that will make you feel better and help reduce hot flashes.”
Rhonda will meet with you to evaluate your goals and develop a functional training regimen. She emphasizes weight training, cardiovascular conditioning, core training, balance and nutrition. Typically, Rhonda meets with her clients two to three days a week for thirty minutes a session. “I can show you how to get a great workout in a short amount of time, and it will be catered to your specific needs. My goal is to help you live a healthy lifestyle. We will start slow, and you will start seeing results. I’ll push you to your limits, but I’m no Jillian,” she laughs, referring to the hard-as-nails trainer on TV’s “The Biggest Loser.”
In fact, that is why Rhonda, 46, focuses on training women who are around her age and older – she knows what it takes to motivate ladies and get results. Rhonda is friendly and compassionate, and she fully lives the lifestyle she teaches her clients. A woman in top-notch shape, she has competed in fitness and figure competitions, and is a cyclist.
When helping her clients develop a nutrition plan, she focuses on the glycemic index, which describes the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates. “A lot of people do not know the difference between carbs, but this is crucial to weight loss,” she explains.
Rhonda began her career as a personal trainer about 15 years ago. She also worked six and a half years in the medical field, in orthopedics and sports medicine and internal medicine. “This work really made me realize the importance of fitness and living a healthy lifestyle.”
