With the advice and financial backing from his father, Travis Detter started Spectrum Paint in 1986 with one mission in mind: to bring the customer top quality products at competitive prices using the best possible service.

Before opening his first store, Travis started his business out of a mini-storage building. He targeted industrial accounts. Since then, the independent paint dealer has grown from one employee to 175. His father, John, joined the company physically in 1995.

When Travis began his business almost 30 years ago, he only had six months of paint industry experience. All that has changed and since then, the company has experienced consistent growth. Most recently, the company has opened stores in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
“We are committed to be a leading supplier of architectural, commercial and industrial coatings,” says Gentry Stafford, marketing and communications director.

In October 2013, Spectrum Paint opened a Claremore location. Travis, a CHS graduate and current resident along with part owner Roddy Russo, has grown the original Tulsa location into 52 locations in seven states to become the largest independent paint dealer in the United States.

“We strive to offer the flexibility and response time of a small company, yet offer our customers a broader and more complete product offering than any ‘company’ owned store or home center,” Gentry adds.

Spectrum carries Benjamin Moore Paints and PPG Pittsburgh Paints, two of the most respected paint manufacturers and leaders in technology. “We also distribute stains, lacquers, and high performance and specialty coatings to provide a complete offering of paint and related products,” says Gentry.

Each Spectrum location also has delivery vehicles to make sure customers receive their product on time and in satisfactory condition. Spectrum has field representatives throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina and South Carolina whose job it is to make product recommendations, provide technical assistance and solve problems on site when necessary.

Commercial and industrial customers aren’t the only ones who like Spectrum Paint. Gentry adds, “One of the biggest questions we get is, ‘Do you sell to regular homeowners or do-it-yourselfers?’” The answer is yes. “Because we do a lot of business with commercial, industrial and residential contractors, some people think they can’t just come in and buy paint. We have a great range of products for DIY customers and even have a special menu of products where we have price-shopped and guaranteed comparable sundry products to be the same or lower price than the big box stores. We also share a lot of great stuff on our Facebook and Pinterest page for folks looking for color inspiration.”

Located at 1301 W. Country Club Rd. in Claremore, Spectrum Paint is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and
Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.
