The 11th annual Celebrating the Art of Healing cancer survivor symposium, titled “Finding Balance in 2015,” is slated for March 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John Medical Center’s Mary K. Chapman Health Plaza, 1819 E. 19th St. in Tulsa. The free event is open to cancer survivors and the families, friends and medical professionals who care for them.

Seven-time Olympic Medalist and Oklahoma native Shannon Miller will give the keynote address. In 2011, Miller was diagnosed with germ cell ovarian cancer, a rare form of cancer that strikes women in their teens and early twenties. She will share her personal experiences as an Olympic champion, cancer survivor, and health wellness expert with an emphasis of finding balance in mind, body and spirit during the cancer journey.

Shannon explains, “I like to highlight the lessons I learned through the sport that helped me in my journey. Whether it is goal setting, making sure you have a supportive team, or identifying your ‘new’ normal, these lessons are things that anyone can lean on during those difficult times. No matter where you are in your journey, it’s important to know that you are not alone.”
The symposium will also feature breakout sessions on topics such as fitness and nutrition, personal narrative, laughter yoga, guided imagery, intimacy after treatment, relaxation and more. A complimentary lunch will be provided.

“Celebrating the Art of Healing is a day of hope for cancer survivors, caregivers and professionals that promotes healthy behaviors and highlights activities that enrich the quality of life for those who face the challenges of cancer,” said committee member Jolene Sanditen-Stephens. “The symposium, now in its 11th year, allows participants to gain inspiration and participate in educational, fun and relaxing breakout sessions.”

The event is sponsored by St. John Health System, Saint Francis Hospice, Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Space is limited, so registration is requested.
