Bring out your Mardi Gras beads and celebrate “Fat Tuesday” at the 2nd annual Volunteers for Youth “Chair-ity” Auction slated for February 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Claremore Community Center. “This year’s event will be like the first “Chair-ity” Auction on steroids,” said Volunteers for Youth Executive Director Mendy Stone. “If you attended and had fun last June, you will definitely want to put the date on your calendar and purchase your tickets. If you missed it, absolutely make plans to attend this one!”

The Mardi Gras themed event will feature a live auction of creatively re-purposed and re-designed furnishings (primarily chairs) as well as a silent auction where “recycled” art and home décor items will go home with the high bidders. Cajun cuisine, jazz music, and a raucous, Extreme Musical Chairs event will round out the evening. For a $50 buy-in, Extreme Musical Chairs contestants can win elimination prizes escalating to a weekend at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

Donations of $20 will enter you in a drawing for two round-trip airfare tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies in the continental United States, an $800 value. The winner will be drawn at the event, and entries will be taken up until the time of the drawing.

Volunteers for Youth is calling on all Pinterest enthusiasts, DIY fans, and the generally creative types to participate. Donations of “chair” entries as well as items for the silent auction are still being accepted; contact the Volunteers for Youth office at (918) 343-2530.

Tickets are on sale now for the event and may be purchased at the Volunteers for Youth office inside Claremore’s Grand Bank, the Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the Claremore Community Center, the JM Davis Gun Museum, and Vintique Charm in downtown Claremore. Prior to the event, tickets are $15 each or two for $25. Tickets sold at the door will be $20 each.
“The ‘Chair-ity’ Auction offers a great chance for members of the public to exercise their creativity and support our youth-serving programs. Every young person has value, just like every piece of furniture, even those pieces that are in need of love and attention,” said Stone.
The mission of Volunteers for Youth is to positively impact the lives of Rogers County youth. This is accomplished through mentoring programs (PAL & e-PAL), an after school program (BLAST), a program for suspended students (U-Turn Academy), and a program for first-offenders or those on the path to delinquency (Step-Up). “We also deploy strategies to reduce underage drinking and substance abuse through our Drug Free Communities and STOP Act projects,” Stone added. Volunteers for Youth is supported in part by Rogers County United Way.
