Rogers County 4-H Horse Club members are ready for their first Hoof It 5K & Fun Run set for October 11 at Claremore Lake. (L to R): Alaina Orban, club secretary; Madison Farrow, recreation leader; Ivy Orban, historian; Sydney Replogle, active member; and Lyndsey Harvey, president.

Three area organizations will benefit from the Hoof It 5K & Fun Run set for Saturday, October 11 at Claremore Lake. With 60 active members, the Rogers County 4-H Horse Club is sponsoring the event, which will start with check-in at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 1-mile fun run at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30.
Proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for senior 4-H members who plan to attend  college, to support educational programs (e.g. clinics, horse judging, and horse quiz bowl), as well as awards for their year-end banquet. Two other organizations, Wild Heart Animal Rescue in Foyil and the Ronald McDonald House, will also benefit from the event. Club members voted to split 10 percent of the proceeds between the two groups. Both organizations have already benefitted from the 4-H Club’s generosity.
“We pass a can around at our monthly meetings and take up a collection for Wild Heart Animal Rescue,” says club president Lyndsey Harvey. “We also collect pop cans and use the money from recycling them to purchase food and other supplies for the ranch.” In addition, the club has donated used horse blankets and tack to Wild Heart. The club has a long history of supporting local horse rescue organizations.
Ronald McDonald House in Tulsa benefits from the club’s generosity as well. Pop tabs are collected and then donated to the cause. According to their website, Ronald McDonald Houses collect pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because it’s more hygienic to store tabs than cans, and collection and storage is easier.
Participants in the 5K & Fun Run who have registered by September 26 will receive a moisture-wicking shirt (size request guaranteed). The entry fee of $25 is guaranteed through October 6, but shirt sizes are not guaranteed. A late and race-day registration fee of $30 will be accepted with no guarantee of shirt availability.
To register – race packets are not being mailed out – you can enter online at www.hoofit5K.eventbrite.com or download an application from the website. You can also find more information on their Facebook page at “Hoof It 5K & Fun Run.”
The top male and female in each age group will receive a unique plaque. Age groups are 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and over. In addition, there will be stick horse races for kids of all ages. “If you can’t run,” says Lyndsey, “you can ride your stick horse.” Bring your own stick horse.
The Claremore Lake Trail 5K is paved, and water will be provided at two stations on the course with refreshments provided at the finish.
“I’m very excited to have a new type of club fundraiser,” Lyndsey adds. “I’m confident this event is going to be successful.”
The Rogers County 4-H Horse Club has been in existence for over 40 years. The organization’s purpose is to inspire and safely educate young people, through 4-H, to forge positive personal attributes and foster a lifelong fellowship with horses. Members participate in various horse-related leadership activities, including speeches, judging contests and quiz bowl competitions. They also volunteer their time for community service projects such as trash cleanup on local county roads, and collecting donations for the community food bank and a local women’s shelter. They’ve also raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Sponsorships are still available and are tax deductible, as the 4-H Club is a 501c3 organization.
