Sixteen-year-old Madison Todd is a remarkable young lady who is learning on a daily basis the many facets of running a successful boutique.  Since her mother, Susan Todd, and her mom’s friend, Cari Bohannan, opened The District on Main in November of 2012, Madison has worked side by side with the two ladies, helping to build a successful business as well as build self-esteem amongst clientele by assisting women in finding their own personal styles.

The District on Main is a boutique specializing in clothing and accessories for women of all ages. The store carries several popular lines including Brighton, Kendra Scott, Fossil, Lucky’s Jeans, and Southern Marsh. When asked to define Madison’s position at the store, Susan and Cari answered, “She is our marketing manager, buyer, and model!” Susan added that their trust in Madison is so great that when she is needed, she actually runs the store. Madison has been an enthusiastic pupil both when it comes to running a business and keeping up-to-date on the fashion and clothing industry. She maintains The District’s website and social media, making clients aware of the latest fashions and trends, often giving advice that is quite wise for one so young.

With the school year and a changing season approaching, wardrobe changes are imminent, so Madison discusses how to build a wardrobe that will take you through the coming season and provide variety without draining your pocketbook. She suggests starting with foundation pieces, including a simple, versatile dress for special occasions, a few short-sleeved shirts and a couple of pairs of jeans or crops for casual wear, a jacket that goes with anything (she points out that army green will be big this year), a brown or black crossbody bag, an everyday flat or sandal, and a basic brown belt. Building on these pieces, you can change the look of your outfits by keeping several different colored tanks, printed scarves and colorful jewelry to brighten things up. Madison also suggests purchasing a light wash chambray button down shirt that can be paired with denim or a pair of colored jeans, both of which will change things up from time to time.

“By having each of these versatile pieces, you are able to mix and match them as you please. For instance, wearing the chambray shirt with a statement necklace and colored jeans shows that you are ready to take care of business!” says Madison. “By wearing the colored jeans with a simple tee, you look effortlessly stylish and ready for a fun day.” Madison also encourages ladies not to be afraid to accessorize. “Adding a statement necklace or scarf can make an outfit look much more stylish and cute.”

Madison loves being a part of The District on Main in Claremore and feels that working there is helping her to map out a plan for her future as she learns about all aspects of operating a boutique. Her work at the The District has been a main consideration as she has begun visiting with colleges about her future education. But most of all, she loves the interaction with the people who come to the shop. “I like helping people build a healthy self-image,” she says. “This has definitely broadened my horizons.”

The District on Main is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
