Circle Cinema @ Philbrook
$5/Circle & Museum Members, $8.50/not-yet members
This year, Jean-Michel Basquiat would be 50 years old. But in 1988 at the age of 27, the Brooklyn-born painter whose work rocked the art-world establishment died of a heroin overdose. In this documentary, Basquiat\'s close friend Tamra Davis takes a very personal look at the artist who has now become an icon. See Basquiat in action – with his own words and work powerfully conveying the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

Presenter: Theatre Tulsa
A beauty pageant is coming to the Tulsa PAC this September! Miss Great Plains, Miss Industrial Northeast, Miss Deep South and many more will strut their stuff before a panel of judges pulled directly from the live theatre audience. And, if all that wasn\\\\\\\'t enough to interest you in this comedic experience, all the lovely contestants will be played by cross-dressed men!
Conceived by Robert Longbottom with book and lyrics by Bill Russell and Frank Kelly and music by Albert Evans, Pageant is an uproarious satire of beauty pageant culture that is sure to have you rolling in the aisles.

Great Decisions Presents: The Building of the National Military Academy of Afghanistan
Given the mission to build a university in Kabul, Afghanistan, with no money and no budget, Col. James Wilhite began a task that would change the shape of higher education for many years to come. He was assigned to start a four-year military academy modeled after West Point for the Afghan National Army. There have been two graduating classes since then, and now women also are included. Wilhite recounts this story in his book “We Answered the Call.” Meet Wilhite and hear an update on the military academy and what’s in store for the future. Afterward, he will sign books. Copies will be available for purchasing. For adults and teens. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries.

Beyond Facebook and Tweets:Taking Social Media to the Next Level
Seventy exabytes of data will be created this year through blogs, books, tweets, Facebook updates, new Web sites and more. It is the equivalent of 518,000 Libraries of Congress. With this much content, we risk the Internet and social media someday becoming ultimately worthless. With purposeful interactions, however, social media tools can add value to our lives beyond simply connecting to our friends. Bill Handy, visiting professor at Oklahoma State University in the School of Media and Strategic Communications, will discuss the theoretical concepts of social media and guide us beyond the traditional and trivial uses. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the value of social media and the larger implications it has to our lives, society, businesses and organizations. For adults and teens. Preregistration is required. Class size is limited. Sponsored by the Tulsa City-County Library Research Center and Tulsa Library Trust.

Joy Harjo Presents Wings of Night Sky,Wings of Morning Light
From musician, poet and playwright Joy Harjo (Mvskoke) comes a deeply compelling journey of struggle, displacement, self-discovery and healing. Invoking spoken word, storytelling and song, Harjo combines character-driven narrative with tales inspired by the traditions of her people – and takes a few turns blowing a mean jazz saxophone. An allegorical work of tremendous power, “Wings” demonstrates how theater and art can bring life full circle. This unique and genre-bending one-woman play features Harjo’s original music and a score that has been pushed and molded by Grammy award-winning record producer Larry Mitchell, who recently produced Harjo’s “Winding Through the Milky Way” album. Harjo will sign books and CDs after the program. For adults and teens. Sponsored by the American Indian Resource Center, Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers, and Tulsa Library Trust.

The 13th Annual Art of BBQ
Septemper 24th and 25th, 2010
On behalf of The Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, we would like to invite you to attend the 13th Annual Art of Barbeque, presented by Oklahoma Central Credit Union. Art of Barbeque features a world-class barbeque cook-off contest, officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS).
The Grand Champion receives $1200 plus an entry to the ever popular, American Royal contest held each October.
$10,000 BBQ TEAM CASH PAY OUT
SATURDAY PEOPLES CHOICE TASTER KIT - $10 SAMPLING - 11:30am – 2:00pm
COMPETE OR SIMPLY COME SAMPLE GREAT BBQ!
It is one of Oklahoma\'s most popular competitions, with a Grand Champion selected to represent the state in the National Championship Cook-off in October at the American Royal in Kansas City. We will be awarding over $10,000 in prize money to a field of 70+ BBQ teams. The Art of Barbeque is celebrating its 13th year supporting the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa. Our event features a world-class barbeque cook-off contest, officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), great musical entertainment, activities for the kids, plus all the food and beverage you care to enjoy. We hope you\'ll be a part of the excitement! More importantly, though, the Art of Barbeque helps support the important mission of the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa to bring the arts to Tulsa youth. Funds from the event underwrite ambitious efforts such as the Artists-in-the-Schools program, which gives K-12 kids a hands-on opportunity to participate in the arts right in the classroom. In an age of strained school budgets, it may be the only arts education many children receive. And federal-level studies clearly show its importance in terms of improved overall academic achievement and reduced rates of high-risk behavior. Please find the enclosed BBQ Team Entry form. We\'re offering a $25 early bird discount if your entry is received prior to May 15, 2010. We have room for 12 RV\'s and 75 cook sites. Along with the entry form you will find a list of event details. See you in September for the 13th Annual event!

Celtic Fiddle Festival
Presenter: PAC Trust Music @ 2nd & Cincinnati
Sold-out tours and standing ovations testify to the electricity and excitement generated when these three amazing fiddlers from different countries come together. Kevin Burke (Ireland), Christian Lemaître (France) and André Brunet (Canada) combine their talents, musical traditions and spontaneous humor for an evening of dazzling energy and subtle grace.
Originally conceived as a unique touring project in 1992, the trio proved such a success that a live recording was released. Three albums and numerous international tours later, the ensemble is now one of the most popular on the Celtic circuit.
In concert, each artist plays a solo set showcasing his individual musical style and tradition. A collaborative set featuring all three fiddlers follows. Together they play with such relentless precision and fire that the tunes transcend all cultural and geographical barriers, leaving the audience with a memorable musical experience.

Secret Keeper Girl Live! The Pajama Party Tour
Mother & Daughter Night Out
Created as a relationship-building event for moms and their tween daughters (typically ages 8-12), the two and a half hour event features dramatized stories about meaningful friendships, fun fashion shows that demonstrate modesty, incredible balloon sculptures, bouncing beach ball competitions, mother/daughter conversation time & colorful confetti cannons. A handful of moms are featured with their own hilarious fashion show in the new Totally Tubular TV Mom’s Show, a look at the fashion of some of TV’s favorite moms – and a great chance to talk about peer pressure! Five special girls from the area have been pre-selected as models for the tour’s hallmark, a seasonal tween fashion show featuring Gresh’s Truth or Bare Modesty Tests. Everything is designed to encourage discussions about modesty, peer pressure, and true inner beauty. (Moms and daughters will even be treated to some photos of celebs without make-up to prove just how fake the beauty on magazine covers can be!)
