Throughout his prolific career, Ansel Adams celebrated the beauty of Americas magnificent landscapes and the spirit of its people. His beloved Yosemite National Park, his hometown, San Francisco, and the vistas of the American Southwest play significant roles in this encyclopedic collection.

Price Tower Arts Center Opens Green Exhibition on August 22
On August 22nd, Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma will begin the conversation through art about the environmental impact of today’s society by utilizing the vocabulary of upcycling, recycling, consumption and squander.
The exhibition entitled, Imaginative Qualities of Actual Things, will explore the new world of object reassignment, presenting creative repurposed or ‘upcycled’ objects that both stretch the imagination and suggest how to reduce the impact on the environment. From repurposed puzzle pieces on wallpaper to oversized photographs showing the massive disposal of cell phones, this exhibition makes the audience pause in a moment of awe and personal reflection. This inaugural exhibition is a part of Price Tower Arts Center’s new Triennial exhibition series, appropriately dubbed 3-logy (pronounced trilogy), which will examine international contemporary artwork produced or manufactured in the last three years.
With over 30 objects on display, contemporary artists like Tracy Kendall and Kate Goldsworthy from Great Britain, Volksware from Germany, Anke Weiss from the Netherlands, Miwa Koizumi from Japan, Zac Freeman from Florida, and Jill Weinstock from New York will be represented at Price Tower Arts Center, 510 Dewey Avenue, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, from August 22, 2008 to January 6, 2009.
Imaginative Qualities of Actual Things addresses the serious environmental issues the world is facing in a playful and inventive way. The works are visually stunning in their own right, so that even the casual viewer will be fascinated by the creative transformation of common objects such as audio tapes, floppy disks, water bottles, newspapers, old clothes, and more.
There have been few U.S. exhibitions that have highlighted this topic of sustainability in the form of art. Imaginative Qualities may well ignite a new international dialogue from the heartland of the U.S. It raises questions about the role of art and culture in developing a sustainable future. It offers new models for artistic practice and in the process, expanding the notion of what can be considered art. The exhibition’s concepts and contents raise questions about our society’s habits of consumption and attitudes toward the environment, natural and human resources and offer artistically conceived alternatives.
Many of the artists featured are exploring the manipulation of common objects to create secondary functions and works of art, for example, El Anatsui’s Detrius series, 2007-2008, a textile-like piece made of recycled wine bottle wrappers. Everyday objects such as puzzle pieces, electronic parts, VHS tapes, old clothing, books, newspapers, and even skyscrapers are rousing artists and designers to convey new ideas and fresh perspectives into issues of production, display, decoration and use.
Michaela Merryday, Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Tulsa, co-curates this exhibition along with Price Tower Arts Center’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Scott W. Perkins, Ph.D. candidate in History of Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture at Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture, New York, NY. Dr. Merryday was chosen for her extensive knowledge and experience with contemporary public and political art practices. She previously had been nominated for the Council of Graduate Schools’ Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2003. She has received numerous research grants, including a number of Faculty Development Grants, a Women’s Studies Development Grant and several Kravis Travel Grants.
Dr. Merryday says, “While not all of the projects presented here offer practical or realizable solutions, they ask the audience critically to examine their own habits, their community’s environmental policies, and, in an election year, the environmental policies of the presidential candidates. Simultaneously, the exhibition seeks to inspire the audience to think about changes in their own lives and communities that would contribute toward a sustainable future. In short, the exhibition addresses issue of political currency … A museum exhibition allows us to address these issues in a neutral space divorced from political partisanship. We would like this exhibition to serve as such a forum for the communities of Northeast Oklahoma.”
Mr. Perkins, who envisioned the 3-logy series, adds, “This extraordinary opportunity to collaboration with Dr. Merryday, an expert in environmental and contemporary artwork, and the University of Tulsa provides a platform for discussion with students, professors, and the general public on up-to-the minute issues in the art world.” The vibrant duo will bring some of the most innovative artworks to the doorsteps of Frank Lloyd Wright’s only built skyscraper, the Price Tower.
The 3-logy series was formulated to encompass the three concentrations of Price Tower Arts Center’s collection – art, architecture and design - with a nod to the triangularity of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower design. Each exhibition will feature up-and-coming and established artists, architects and designers whose work engages with the central theme of each triennial exhibition.

In a Different Light: The Book of Genesis in the Art of Samuel Bak
September 21, 2008 - January 25, 2009
Brodsky and Second Floor Galleries
Samuel Bak examines creation, cruelty, mortality, morality, and accusation. Subjects include: scriptural stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and the various encounters with their Creator, humankind\'s passage through Time and its changing role in existence, tikkun hao\'lam - the enormous task of repairing the world, and Michelangelo\'s Creation of Adam, at whose center God\'s and Adam\'s pointing fingers nearly touch.
Imbued with the same rich color palette and use of metaphors for which Bak is renowned, Bak\'s paintings add new symbols and characters to his repertoire. Moreover, this series from the Pucker Gallery asks difficult questions concerning divine compassion, human defiance, moral responsibility, and the role of the artist in society.

Price Tower Arts Center Paints Bartlesville Green!
Price Tower Arts Center (PTAC) invites the community to a free festival celebrating the arts through sustainability on October 11, 2008. The sixth annual Family Arts Festival’s (FAF) theme is based on recycling and upcycling and is titled Paint the Town Green: Sustainable Family Fun! The festival focuses on art, architecture, and design using family activities, games, music and the community’s involvement.
“This great community event is free and open to the public and growing. It is planned by the community, for the community and features hands-on arts activities and entertainment for all ages,” says Jennifer Cordero, PTAC spokesperson.
Arts activities at the festival will inspire children to be creative by recycling newspaper into hats, reusing their chip bags into origami and producing their own recycled sand art. There will also be several local artists displaying and selling their work, a children’s story hour, architectural scavenger hunt, face painting, skyscraper ring toss, a tongue depressor picture frame and the ever popular family building a building contest. Refreshments will be provided by local restaurants and caterers.
“Admission to the museum at the tower will be free that day and the foot-stomping Red Dirt Rangers will be performing in a live outdoor concert,” adds Cordero.
The festival coincides with a new exhibit in the tower entitled Imaginative Qualities of Actual Things. The exhibit will be on display from August 22, 2008 to January 4, 2009, and features everyday objects transformed into art and design works. Guest curator, Michaela Merryday, assistant professor at the TU School of Art, is slated to give a lecture on the exhibition in September. Below is the full schedule of accompanying events.
“The exhibition features over twenty contemporary artists and designers who have repurposed, recycled or ‘up-cycled’ everyday objects into new works of art and design,” says Scott Perkins, PTAC curator.
Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH Anchor Karen Larsen will emcee the festival, and sponsors for the event include KJRH Channel 2 (NBC), ConocoPhillips, the Oklahoma Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, Visual FX, and the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise.

Diavolo
Diavolo Artistic Director Jacques Heim hopes to generate a deeper understanding and appreciation for dance by artistically rendering everyday experiences on stage. He believes that art can be found in even the most common activities and movements. His compelling Los Angeles-based modern dance company is composed of dancers, gymnasts, rock climbers and actors who collaborate to create a cinematic experience of powerful images and abstract narratives. They examine the challenge of relationships, the absurdities of life, and the funny and frightening ways people interact with their environment.

Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle
Journalist Jeannette Walls has penned articles for New York Magazine, USA Today and Esquire, but it was her 2005 memoir, The Glass Castle, that showed the world what a remarkable person she really is. Walls\' father was a brilliant but destructive alcoholic; her mother, a free-spirited artist who chafed at the responsibility of raising four children. Walls\' courage and determination to escape the crushing poverty of her childhood serve as an inspiration and a testament to the power of education.

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was formed in 1958 as a small, conductorless chamber ensemble. Led by Neville Marriner and attracting some of the finest players in London, the orchestra at first concentrated on repertoire from the Baroque era, developing a style of performance that launched the 1960s Baroque revival. The Academy was so named after the various concert-giving societies or Academies that had flourished in 18th- century London and the famous church in which it gave its first concert on November 13, 1959.
Only two years later it had secured its first recording contract, with the independent L\\\'Oiseau-Lyre label. This was to be the beginning of a record-breaking discography that now boasts well over 500 entries, making the Academy the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world. Thanks to a huge recorded catalogue and widespread radio coverage, the Academy\\\'s name has become familiar to audiences across the globe.
